The song is NOT about Cobain. DAVE STATED its about Pete Stahl and Chip Donaldson, two people that nobody knows about because its not in the media. Why do you people treat Dave Grohl like he didnt have a life before the age of 20? Pete Stahl was in the band Scream and taught Dave the ropes about being in a band and touring (Dave SAID this), and Chip Donaldson was his mother's boyfriend. He looked up to both a great deal. "The thing that I hold so dear when it comes to my heroes is, you wouldn't know them," he says, pointedly. "One of them is Jimmy Swanson. Another one is Pete Stahl. Another one is Chip Donaldson. These are people I've grown up with and gained enormous amounts of respect for, in being just very normal people: strong, solid, respectable people. I think that throughout all of this crazy music bullshit that has happened in the last eight years, I've needed these people as a foundation. They're very close friends. They're like family, 'basically." http://www.fooarchive.com/features/nmejan98.htm He just was not that close to Cobain. Im sorry if you think its cute or whatever, but its just not true. You'd think the lyrics make enough sense so it isnt about Cobain.. "Dont the best of them bleed it out, while the rest of them peter out" Cobain petered out, did he not? Some people should just be kept away from keyboards. Swanson - the friend who died in 2008 and inspired "I Should Have Known." |

The song is about his childhood friend, and one of the BEST friends, Jimmy Swanson, who died of a drug overdose in 2008. He "should have known" it would happen because Taylor almost died of an OD in 2002. Dave was NOT that close with Kurt Cobain, contrary to what some people assume. I really dont fucking know where this shit comes from. Its as if Dave Grohl didnt have a personal life before he was 20 years old or something, I dunno. Nirvana, albeit important, is a very small portion of his life (3 years). Heres an article from Rolling Stone in 2005 where Dave even says he and Kurt werent that close. Sure, they were bandmates and they were friends, but its Dave Grohl. For him to say anything bad about Cobain would be in bad taste since the guy is dead. Former member of Nirvana, drummer Dave Grohl has recently confessed that while he played with Nirvana he suffered of loneliness and felt like an outcast, because of the special relationship between frontman Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic. He told Rolling Stone magazine, "When I joined Nirvana I was the fifth or sixth drummer - I don't know if they'd ever had a drummer they were totally happy with. "And they were strangers. There was never much of a deeper connection outside of the music. Krist and Kurt had a legendary lifetime connection. "Those guys were soul mates. They'd been through so much together, from Aberdeen (in Washington state) to the success of Nevermind. They f**king shared everything. I never really shared that moment with them because I came from such a different place." Dave also said he was never really accepted in the band, because Kurt wasn't satisfied with his musical skills. "I don't think I've ever told anyone this, but there were times when Kurt was really unhappy with the way I played drums. I could hear him talking about how much he thought I sucked." During the acoustic tour in 2006, he even talked about his first phone convo with Cobain and how he accidentally made fun of his girlfriend. Dave was the odd man out in that band, plain and simple. The song was written in 1990 when he JUST met them. Its not about how much he loved them. This is why I can tell he gets upset when people constantly ask him about that. I can just imagine Dave's response to their questions. "I only fucking knew him for 3 years dude!" |

This song is about when he met Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic for the first time. If any of you know a thing about Dave, hes from Washington, DC suburbs (Virginia) and had been in a DC punk band called Scream most of his late teens. Some of his best friends were in that band like Skeeter Thompson and the Stahl brothers. They split in Los Angeles while on tour and Dave talked to Buzz Osbourne who was in the Melvins. He said this band Nirvana is looking for a drummer and they like how you play. So he went up there and auditioned and joined the band. Dave had never lived there before, hes an East Coast guy from DC. He had NO friends there, and Kurt and Krist were "weird" guys as he has said a few times. He wrote a song about these two new guys he just met. People need to stop asking him about it as if he was best friends with them, because he wasnt. He knew them for about a year and then the band blew up and the whole 2 and a half years he experienced it by himself. Dave only got one compliment his entire time with the band. Its not an ode to Kurt Cobain so please shut up. Its about how lonely he was because he wasnt home (DC) and his best friends werent there (Scream). Stop thinking he was buddy-buddy with Kurt Cobain. He wasnt, and let it go. |

Does anyone realize this song was done before Dave Grohl joined Nirvana? Please, cut the shit with the Kurt Cobain references. You're looking for something thats just not there. The song was done well before 1994, as were quite a few songs on the first and second record. Its getting really comical now. |

he wasn't close to either of them. he says this a million times in a million interviews, that he was the stranger. besides, lets take a look at something: the lyric "..don't the best of them bleed it out, while the rest of them peter out.." cobain certainly petered out, which is completely contradictory to what hes writing about. this is also explained at this link: http://www.fooarchive.com/features/kerrangjune06.htm after reading that, you should now see that this song is NOT ABOUT cobain. it is inspired by how others view their heroes. |

| Foo Fighters – Best Of You Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| For the record, when he dedicated this song to "you know who" @ LiveEarth, it was to President Bush regarding his environmental policy, or lack thereof. The whole meaning of the concert was to raise awareness on global warming, a political issue. Its just blatantly stupid and ignorant to think otherwise. | |
| Foo Fighters – The Pretender Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Dave has admitted that there are many songs that have a political meaning or inspiration to them (especially on the last two albums). He's reluctant to say that the Foos are a political band because they're not, and he wants to keep a universalism in the meaning of the music, so it means something different to everyone. This song though, is definitely about our government, and its fucking spot on. Dave's from DC, I find it hard to think he wouldn't include something political in his songs. | |
