Kanye West – Good Morning (Intro) Lyrics 16 years ago
"You got D's motherfucker, D's, Rosie Perez"

This line is a reference to Spike Lee's film, "Do The Right Thing." Radio Raheem says he wants "D's motherfucker, D's" when speaking to an Asian store clerk who doesn't understand him. The film also stars Rosie Perez.

Bright Eyes – June on the West Coast Lyrics 17 years ago
I remember hearing this song when I was on vacation during the first week of summer after a particularly stressful year of high school. The summer, and specifically June, represent to me a chance to just get away from everything for a while and reflect on who you are. You need to just get away from everything and get back on your feet for a while.

Bright Eyes – Poison Oak Lyrics 17 years ago
I definitely buy into the "In Cold Blood" theory. Perry Smith talks about the yellow bird, which comes and saves him whenever he is in harm's way. I think the yellow bird is one of Bright Eyes' best lyrical symbols.

Also, there are other parts of the song which sort of remind me of "In Cold Blood."

"When you stole the car and drove towards Mexico
And you wrote bad checks just to fill your arm
I was young enough, I still believed in war"

Perry and Dick did just that. They stole a car and, after killing the Clutters, they drove toward Mexico. They also wrote bad checks.

"Poison oak, some boyhood bravery
When the telephone was a tin can on a string
And I fell asleep with you still talking to me
You said you weren't afraid to die"

This may be stretching it, but these lines remind me of "To Kill a Mockingbird," which it is rumored that Capote had a large part in writing. Boyhood Bravery, telephones made of tin cans, and falling asleep with you still talking to me are all images that just sort of remind me of Jem, Scout, and Dill's childhood.

Bright Eyes – Make War Lyrics 17 years ago
"So hurry up and run to the one that you love
And blind him with your kindness
And he'll make war, oh, war, on who you were before
And claim all that has spoiled in your heart"

I think He's sort of being sarcastic, saying "go ahead and run to your new lover. He's saying that this person will "make war" on the person she was, meaning that he will try to explain to her how much she was flawed when she was with Conor, or the person represented in the song. Then, he says he will "claim all that has spoiled in your heart," meaning that he will take her heart, which he feels has been spoiled and try to "fix" it, which actually means that he will take it and make it into the way he wants it to be.

Bright Eyes – Make War Lyrics 18 years ago
"Because the truth is that gossip's as good as gospel in this town
You can save face but you won't ever save your soul"

I really like that line. The idea that every little piece of gossip is just as good as gospel is a really good explanation for why a lot of relationships end the way they do.

Overall, I think this song is about falling really hard for someone. After you get past that early phase of the relationship, some of the good stuff sort of starts to wear off and it eventually ends. Even though you were completely honest with that person about how much you were in love with them, they tell you that they no longer feel that way about you. It is amazing how people can go from being extraordinarily close to each other to wanting to "make war" against each other.
