with all respect, lovecalder, I have to disagree with you. If a song is written merely to stimulate the listener's indulgences what's the point of writing it? If Joseph Conrad wrote heart of darkness for everyone to interpret their own meaning, then it accomplished nothing. What is the point of creation if not to communicate on a level higher than speech alone, if what is being communicated is relative than there is no communication thus it nothing but a waste of time. At least that's how I see it. |

I don't know if radiohead has openly said this, but I know a lot of people believe that their songs aren't made to with a "meaning" in mind. That every song should be interpreted how ever the listener wants to. I for one disagree with this method. I honestly believe that if a work doesn't mean anything to the artist it won't mean anything to the listener, which is why i choose to believe that radiohead doesn't do that. There is to much power and persuasion behind this song that it is nearly impossible to listen to it "casually" do to how alienating it is. It seems to me that the lyrics are focused around an idea of "seperation" and also "belief" hence the title reckoner (thinker). I think it is a reflection of how our thoughts and our beliefs often overwhelm us and become distractions from our humanity and our lives. and as an after thought I'm quite convinced that the first "dedicated to all human beings" is actually "did it cater to all your needs" and the second one is as it says in the booklet, but I could be wrong. |

to be honest, I think this song is about the moment after. When you realize that all you have experienced isn't just a magical getaway and that it really does have an impact upon existance. "As the magic disappears. No longer wound up like a spring" is indicative of the come down from this emotional high. I really appreciate this song because the moment after the excitement dies is such a relevant topic in modern day lives, it seems that we live too much for today and don't realize that tomorrow exists until it finally does. Beautiful. |
