"Come on down from the top of the mountain, flowing" Falling for something "Doin` the slow slide into town, keep on going" Falling in front of society, losing control "Darkness dancers get down, heavily hoping" Dancing is searching for emotional connection, heavily hoping for what? "Stroking the stone soul, loving, drinking and doping" The "stone soul" would be the hard part of one's soul. Drinking and doping implies you are preparing yourself to quiet your conscience about this downward slide. "Like a blind moth looking for color in the lights" This is obviously a reference to instinctual or nonthinking behavior "Dance in the spotlight, I feel alright" Quoting someone in such a state of acting out without thinking. "Just my devil, my devil delight" Need I say more? "I've seen those midnight ladies just for the moment`s using" Now her point-of-view changes from taunting the women she is appealing to, to a third-party view, commenting that they are being used when they "hook up" (which is the ultimate goal, whether for short or long-term). "She keep on playing, never know whether she`s losing it" Further supporting all of the above points. "He got those sexy green eyes, clicking the trigger, no warning" Possibly changing POV back again, while adding details. "It`s all gonna come rolling back in the morning" Call to caution "You might feel me burning all night Like a dirty demon daughter, don`t put up no fight" This is a bit odd, paraphrasing the man using her own language and POV. "I dance in the spotlight, I`m alright It`s just my devil, my devil delight" Denial of the victim. "Lover and fool, glass and jewel, the potion" The dangerous man and willing victim, and the tools. "Comedy, tragedy, making the game, emotion" Redundant commentary to balance the phrase lengths. "On your toes, do the gambling roll for your fortune" Same as line above. "We fall for love from up above to the ocean" This is a closing reference to the opening line, "Come on down from the top of the mountain" This song is about the "fall from grace" caused by giving in to temptation. The context is sex, directed at women. |

I thought the masturbation idea was totally the result of someone projecting their own "issues" until I saw and thought about this line; Sometimes I wish someone would (wishes there was someone that could please her better than herself) Why would you be so happy (apparently) with a real lover and then wish someone would be better? I is either self-love (emotionally at least) or the fantasies of a promiscuous person who wants or needs multiple sex partners that can keep her "in tune". I shouls also say that as someone who was a very young adult at the taill end of the age of promiscuous behavior framed by the post-war baby boomers and the revelation that sexually transmitted diseases are more than “inconvenient” (AIDS and related serious medical consequences) I had several opportunites to have what most men consider the ultimate situation and to be honest, sex without genuine love and affection gets old pretty fast. I suppose this explains why serial sex partners never satisfy one another. Likewise, masturbation would get old after the hormones stabilize. I think the factors that lead to this are fantasy of a future “ultimate” partner, and also be elevated hormones. Once you realize that there are no ideal people no matter how physically attractive they are, the fantasies (that are in part due to expectations and hopes of future partners). For all of those reasons, I think that song does not make sense as “self love” motivated but that one line does need to be explained if this is supposedly a reference to a sole-mate partner. The last possibility is that the song was written for the film, and that she is totally in love with a spy and she wishes someone more accessible would offer her a better set of circumstances. The more I think about it, the more sense that last theory makes to me |
