It is about the typical everyday life rat race kind of stuff (the video makes the especially obvious), but that's only the backdrop. If you get around to certain places the subtle main meaning is obvious. He frequents sex clubs. |

The video cemented my first impression of hearing the song sung acoustically. It first struck me as a breakup song and I still think it is. While very few music videos don't feature a band playing their instruments on the set, this is used as a device to tell the story. Things seem OK in the beginning. She puts down her laundry, we don't see the cat anymore (single women and cats?) after it's confined in the overturned basket and joins the band and starts playing. Just as in the music the chord progressions convey some uneasiness, you can also see it in the video. The dropped pick. The clock almost falls over. The beer beside the outlet strip and the toasted cheese sandwiches on the stove. You can also hear the uneasiness boiling over to crisis in his voice as he sings the chorus. Things get progressively worse. Halfway through, notice she's no longer playing with him. Instead, she's sulking in the kitchen with the cello after putting out the fire, by far the most serious thing to go wrong. After that, it's not a happy harmony of them playing together. It's an entanglement! At the end, she's almost out, but she can't quite get away. |
