Bright Eyes – June on the West Coast Lyrics 17 years ago
"I visited my brother on the outskirts of Olympia
Where the forest and the water become one
And we talked about our childhood, like a dream we were convinced of
That perfect peaceful street where we came from."

I love this part of the song so much.
Last year I moved to Olympia, Washington to live with my brother.
And although I hated living there these part of the song reminds me of
getting closer to family and all the talks we had
while shivering under our blankets.

Brand New – Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2 (Neutral Milk Hotel cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
I love both bands but I very rarely like covers.
Actually, speaking of NMH, that happens to be one of the few bands whose covers
are good. (And the meat puppets as played by Nirvana)

Iron & Wine – Upward Over the Mountain Lyrics 17 years ago
My interpretation:
------------------

Mother don't worry
I killed the last snake that lived in the creek bed
^The son wishes to protect his mother and so he starts to kill the animals he fears might hurt her.
He's trying to do the right thing but I get the impression that his mother wasn't proud of him,
due to him murdering animals...
Just my impression since this song overall seems to be about trying to make his mother proud
and maybe not doing the best job...
(at this point in the song i feel that he's a young boy.)

Mother don't worry
I've got some money I saved for the weekend
^ not wanting to take money from his mother.

Mother, remember being so stern
With that girl who was with me?
^ his mother is protective of him. maybe he didnt appreciate this at the time.
(this point in the song, it seems he's a teen)

Mother, remember the blink of an eye
When I breathed through your body?
^ Reminding her, perhaps selfishly, that he was once a baby she took care of,
and not to forget about it...
now I don't know sam or anything so don't be like "omfg hes not a bad guy"
im just interpreting it in my own way, hah.

So may the sunrise bring hope
Where it once was forgotten
Sons are like birds
Flying upward over the mountain
^ the child has grown up and is moving on.
the family feels like its being torn apart.
the son is reminding her that the sun will continue to rise, and life will go on.
her son/s need to spread their wings and live their own lives...

Mother, I made it up
From the bruise of a floor of this prison
^ now as an adult, he's made some serious mistakes,
but he wants her to know that he hasn't let them finish him off. he's fighting strong.

Mother, I lost it
All of the fear of the Lord I was given
^ he's ashamed to say it but he feels out of control and apathetic, unsure how to deal
with life on his own without her guidance. without the fear of the lord
he's acting on impulses that caused him to land in prison. (maybe this prison is metaphorical, but it just feels literal when i listen to it.)

Mother forget me
Now that the creek drank the cradle you sang to
^time, like rising water, swallowed the memory of him as a child. (the cradle she sang to him)
all she sees now is a grown man, slightly foolish..

Mother forgive me
I sold your car for the shoes that I gave you
^ his mother has given him so much and what has he done in return?
(comparing a car to shoes...i find this a beautiful metaphor)

So may the sunrise bring hope
Where it once was forgotten
Sons are like birds
Flying upward over the mountain

Mother, don't worry
I've got a coat and some friends on the corner
^ "what are you doing tonight?" etc. seems to return to teen-years.
Mother, don't worry
She's got a garden we're planting together
^ a new girlfriend or perhaps the first girl? feels like this suddenly reverts to post-prison
life. the garden gives the impression of trying to mature and be productive and learn to take care of something other than himself for once.

Mother, remember the night
That the dog had her pups in the pantry?
Blood on the floor and the fleas on their paws
And you cried 'til the morning
^ this one i can't really interpret because the imagery is too beatuiful and perfect to be some metaphor.
its just a memory of her in a vulnerable and beautiful state that he is recalling.

So may the sunrise bring hope
Where it once was forgotten
Sons are like birds
Flying upward over the mountain

love this song =]

Brand New – Jesus Christ Lyrics 17 years ago
This song sounds like it might have been heavily influenced by Modest Mouse. I have noticed similarities in a few places. Especially when he sings:

"And I will die all alone
And when I arrive I won’t know anyone."

It sounds so much like Modest Mouse, haha.
Just commenting on that. Sorry if this wasn't very profound or thought provoking :/

Leftover Crack – Gang Control Lyrics 17 years ago
I always laugh when I read the discussions of bands that fall under the punk category. You always have some asshole saying "I think this song is about hating cops!" and some other asshole complaining that the band isn't punk.

Anyway, the music is absolutely fantastic, the vocals are killer, this song pumps me up and moves me and that's what music should be about. I don't care if cops are crooked or not, or if LOC is punk or not. If a band can move a person, they are worthy of existance. That's the way I see it.
