i'm thinking this song could be about the plight of the native people (in Canada at least).

1st verse: residential schools - white people came in and forced natives into reservations and residential schools where they were taught to forget their 'evil' traditional ways and adopt christianity and european lifestyles

2nd verse - how the native people have unfortunately become a people of destitution

3rd verse - the strength of the people from coast to coast, and the now rampant drug/alcohol abuse that ravages native reserves

beautiful, empathic song

this could be about Judas from Judas' POV as terb thought. there is evidence dating back many more than 2 years ago indicating there are lost sections of the bible. it is absolutely possible that the bible had been edited to only include what bishops/popes of the past thought were acceptable. i'm not saying it happened, or that if it did, it was out of malicious intention. I'm saying it's possible. for argument's sake, let's say judas was the secret confidant of JC. then this song can make sense in those terms.

1st verse: about the perceived betrayal - proving himself as worthy to Jesus and God.

Rest of Song: describing his disappointment in Jesus and the situation. specifics: wait for your return (return of the messiah, his savior) for a whole lifetime with a lot to lose (all the things that are sins that may not be all that bad) with nothing to gain (losing faith in heaven, therefore not gaining anything from abstaining from everything that is a sin)

if my soul survives this fall (to hell? from the good graces of the church?) come back unscathed (didn't happen for the church's graces)

However, something bothers me about this interpretation. namely, the "lent my hand to destroy a helpless man" line. Judas' 'betrayal' did not destroy Jesus, Jesus was resurrected after the crucifixion. And the fact he survived the crucifixion hardly makes him a helpless man. I think there's something else behind the song meaning, and i don't think it's about a boyscout because of the 3rd verse. i'll have to think some more about it to think up my own theory
