The "burn leaves"/"ploughman" line may mean "I can't make you an honest woman." A guy who comes to burn leaves is a manual laborer, basically, who comes and then leaves. A ploughman makes a commitment to the land, plants there and lives off of it and can't move for a while without the investment being wasted. "Oh, I don't want my words twisted I don't want you to listen to close Or wait for me impatiently And I hope I can keep seeing you As long as you don't say you're falling in love" Suggests strongly that there's some kind of affair going on but he doesn't want her to get too emotionally involved--that the relationship is more a vacation than moving permanently to a new place. I think this song is great because of how it's at once a love song and a song about avoiding or wanting to avoid love. Beautiful instrumentation helps it, as well. |

This could be about the Internet and the proliferation of technology in general. The "set" being a reference to a "TV set" which is how someone may sarcastically refer to a monitor and a desktop computer. "Everything is talking" could refer to how we are now surrounded by devices that talk to you all the time, be they your car asking you for voice commands, a cell phone, a TV, a radio, or a computer. "My new friends have messages \ they reach me wherever i am." Notice how all of the stuff mentioned under "i'll miss" are things replaced or made obsolete by technology aside from the first two, arguably. |

I see this song as told from the perspective of a fundamentalist preacher--most likely a fundamentalist Christian who preaches to born-agains. -In goodness wake I'll always say I do, -That it's all for you Everything good I've done, it is for God (or Jesus, or Allah). -And tricks I'd turn would always shine right through, -But it's all for you. Though I lie through my teeth ("tricks I turn"), and that's how most people see me, God knows I am devout and I'm doing it for the right reason. --Like a stream overflowing --Unpredictable --A new confidence like a new king. I have the ultimate confidence in my charms, in the strength of my faith. It gives me power, "like a new king," and that only swells my confidence.
