The first paragraph is totally wrong. It goes: If you found the words, would you really say them? Or STUTTER through the verse WITH mumble punctuation Remembering A line, an empty metaphor That you savored by yourself You're AN EPICURE If I forgot the lines, is it easy enough to fake it? Or do you need a moment to rememorize And model it like a curse half disguised? hahaha. That's what he's saying, I will place money on it! An epicure makes sense, since he's using the word "savor" |

okay, just to add onto three years worth of comments... (: This song is obviously about losing someone. I'm going to say a GIRL, the blouse points that out, i highly doubt this was a man, but think what you will. When I listen to it I think about a young christian girl and guy, and they find out the girl has cancer. I think it goes between him spending time with her now "In the morning, through the window shade When the light pressed up against your shoulderblade I could see what you were reading All the glory that the Lord has made And the complications you could do without(her illness, duh) When I kissed you on the mouth Tuesday night at the Bible study We lift our hands and pray over your body But nothing ever happens(this just seems kind of sad, not really angry)" and he's also looking back on what happened before they found out "I remember at Michael's house In the living room when you kissed my neck And I almost touched your blouse In the morning at the top of the stairs When your father found out what we did that night And you told me you were scared All the glory when you ran outside With your shirt tucked in and your shoes untied And you told me not to follow you" and side note, I think the reason she's scared is because they're like, christians, and they did something "bad", probably sex, and the dad found out, and she was upset and ran out. "On the floor at the great divide With my shirt tucked in and my shoes untied I am crying in the bathroom" I think the "great divide" indicates that she's about to die, and the guy is disheveled. "All the glory that the Lord has made And the complications when I see His face In the morning in the window All the glory when He took our place But He took my shoulders and He shook my face And He takes and He takes and He takes" I think the "complications" are the complicated feelings the person is having, being a christian and dealing with God taking something away. I think he's upset and confused about why she had to go, but I don't think he's necessarily angry, the song would have a different tone. Sufjan said he probably shouldn't put some of the religious things he does into his songs, because they could be misinterpreted, and I think this is one of those times. People who aren't Christians can misconstrue what Sufjan is saying here, but seeing how he IS a Christian, I think he's just expressing the conflict Christians feel inside when they lose something, but like someone said about Job, Christian may not understand, but "all the glory" is still God's. I love this song |
