the song that lets the cat out of the bag. everything that has followed is re-mystification of sorts. but this song requires no interpretation. we are eternal—what more is there to know, really. ;) |

this is a "love" song about the "troubled relationship" between mind and body. |

| Tool – The Patient Lyrics
|
this is sung from the perspective of someone who's gnostically convictional about knowing the purpose of both life and death, and being tempted to skip to the latter, as the former seems tedious at this point (especially in light of what death really "means")
keenan is more often than not having a dialogue with himself, not others. |

| Donovan – Season of the Witch Lyrics
|
Per the glorious internet: "When you pick up stitches, you are adding knit stitches to an existing work in order to expand the work." In the context of this song, I believe "you've to pick up every stitch" is an admonishment to (constantly) expand your consciousness.
This is supported by the rest of the song. "Season of the Witch" isn't necessarily a negative designation, but rather simply expresses that "the times" are strange. That is, the world is fragmented and there's an overwhelming plurality to consciousness, both politically and personally: "When I look out my window, Many sights to see. And when I look in my window, So many different people to be."

spiritual optimism riffing on the scientific "discovery" that matter doesn't exist, that the universe is all energy, which has possibly profound spiritual implications |

| Morrissey – I Have Forgiven Jesus Lyrics

I agree with Tschiggn: Jesus is the "pretty one" for whom Morrissey longs. When you religiously lapse [why did you desert me?] and you've been attracted to your God, it's the ultimate break-up. At least Morrissey makes it sound so. It's not infrequent that Christian passion for Christ is so intense that it enters an erotic realm. |

| Thee More Shallows – 2 AM Lyrics

2AM is about the "noise" of the modern world that can overwhelm and distress a person (even to the point of flirting with solipsism - "Who’s making that noise if I’m up here all alone?”), but eventually (hopefully) one comes to terms with the noise, and moreover is able to "sing your own song", that is, project sense onto the world from an enlightenment within. this song is about spiritual ephiphany and how such closes the neurotic gap between "self" and "world" - "there's no who and no why and no conflict": a Buddhist sentiment. |

| The White Stripes – Blue Orchid Lyrics
|
this song is about Jack White catching his girlfriend cheating on him. the key lyric is "you make up for something [a deficiency in the relationship that she couldn't communicate to him]/but I get the truth from showing up [jack showing up unexpectedly, therefore catching his girlfriend in the act]"
"get behind me now anyway" is White's means of putting the girl in his past. 'how old you now anyway' is confirmation of this - he's not keeping track.
the white orchid was jack's love and commitment (she took it but) and the blue was his resultant sadness when he found it she was unfaithful. (he uses the word 'took' rather than 'accepted' because true acceptance would imply reciprocity) |
