A brief follow up on what Kyeb said:
I believe that the line 'set the crosshairs back on one' means he wishes his son would have a second chance at making it to his first birthday.
Yeah, the part where the guitar solo kicks in after 'through the lens back to your living arms' always gives me chills as well. I will never tire of this album. |

I think it's about someone entering a relationship with someone they've idolized ('painted picture prize'). They have a perfect image of this person upon entering the relationship, but they have doubts ('chance to run away'). They're too intoxicated by the other to listen to those doubts ('poured out in wine', 'lose myself in you'), however, so they enter the relationship, only to find that it's killing them ('poisoned wine'). They ignore it though, because they want to hold on to the image of the person they had before the relationship (the repeating of 'hair of gold'). |

They say that psychologists spend so much time worrying about the problems of others that they ignore what's wrong in their own lives and in the end they end up depressed and alone because they thought it couldn't happen to them because they're the ones who are supposed to have all the answers. The song's about the kind of person who is like that - always trying to fix others, ignoring the things that are broken in their own life. |
