I highly doubt the Captain Obvious even knows Missy Higgins. For me this song epitimises the moment that i realised that "Love rules all, conquers all" is a lie. You can love someone with all your heart but that wont necessarily stop them from leaving. That horrific realisation made me feel like I was 'Drowning'. |

I've never thought about it being about a death, i always thought about it being the end of a relationship, but it does make sense. I've lost count of the amount of times in the last 6 months I've wanted to erase my ex from my head so that I stop hurting. "I'm sure I felt your fingers through my hair." I dreamed it and woke up in tears when I realised it wasn't real. This song hits home, definately. |

The first time I heard this song it took my breath away - no other song had ever explained so perfectly an element of my past before (not the first time one of missys songs has done that). It's amazing because reading through everyones comments on here, people have been sharing their stories in order to explain what they think it means, so I'm going to share mine: At 16 I started going out with this amazing guy who I was madly in love with, he was my first real love. We were together a long time, and talked about marriage and kids and all of that stuff. We had been going out for 3 and a half years when I moved away to go to uni, and suddenly I wasn't anywhere near the kind of priority i had been to him before. He didn't visit, and though I knew he still loved me I knew that I was being taken for granted. After tearing myself apart for nearly 6 months I finally ended it, and broke both of our hearts in the process. I was so unhappy without him and I knew that wasn't right. After being with him for that long I had forgotten who I was when I was alone, and I needed to find that out so I wouldn't be unhappy if I was ever in the same situation again. The sad fact of the matter is, 2 and a half years and 2 different boyfriends later, I'm in the same place, and I still love him. And now he's with someone new. Ironically,NOW I know that she can't love him more that I could, but not knowing who she would be I thought that she would. Thats what this song means to me. |

it's definately about depression. Whenever I'm having one of my really bad days I put this on to remind me that I'm not alone and other people feel like this too. I was going to do a line by line breakdown of what i think it means but i dont think it's necesary. I think it really speaks for itself. |

I like the idea that this could be about his parents divorce, but i dont think it is. I am sure that this is about a lover and this is why: And I've traced your shadows on the wall Now I kiss them whenever I'm down I love the fact that the lyrics in fall out boys songs are so inter woven with references. I had to do a little research in this (sad i know) but i was sure that i had heard something about this in a myth or something. Turns out that theres a myth written by Pliny about a young woman called Dibutades, the maid of Corinth, who traced the shadow of her sleeping lovers face onto the wall as he was leaving for battle the next day and she wished to have a likeness of him to kiss while he was away. This is often cited as being the origin of painting. Romantic huh?! Surprised that no one else seems to have picked up on it. |

i was terrified and would you mind if i sat next to you and watched you smile so many kids but i only see you and i dont think you notice me well i've seen your boyfriend and i dont think he treats you right, but thats none of my business is it? that whole section just grabs me right there. Imagine being a big rockstar and still being terrified of talking to a girl you really like. |

I havent read all the way through all the comments so forgive me if someone has already pointed this out but: Someone old No one new Feeling borrowed always blue Someone old No one new Always borrowed Always you is surely a reference to the old superstitions surrounding marriage? "Something old, something new, something borrowed, somethingblue." Thats what the bride is supposed to carry with her on her wedding day. Not sure how that links in with the interpretations of the song people have put up so far but it puts some bits in a new light for me. |

This is what i think, although i could be wrong: "I'm sleeping my way out of this one With anyone who will lie down" The character in the song is sleeping with a lot of people to distract themselves from the depression that they are in. "I'll be stuck fixated on one star When the world is crashing down" I feel this has a double meaning, one that the star being sung about is a person, perhaps one that he can not have but wants, but also in reference to sailors using stars for navigation, that that person will govern his direction even when his life is falling apart. "I keep telling myself I'm not the desperate type" denial of the depression/mental health state that he's in. "I’m sitting out dances on the wall Trying to forget everything that isn't you" Refusing to partake in social activities, prefering instead to fixate on the person he cant have. Classic depression symptom. "I'm not going home alone cause I don't do too well on my own" Going to take someone, anyone home so that he doesn't have to spend time in his own company. "I'm having another episode I just need a stronger dose" Im pretty sure this is a direct reference to the overdose pete took (especially as it is mentioned in the title) |
