i thought at first he could have been singing to his band mate from crazy horse that overdosed and died. one would obviously associate everything in this album about the current war but he goes on reminiscing throughout most of the song. the guy was quoted to be really depressed and feeling alone as he got kicked out of the band for being such a junkie. since neil is still not a citizen he couldnt be talking about registering for an american war w any old buddy, but who the hell knows. |

def one of my favorite neil young songs, every time i listen to it im convinced it is my favorite, but there is a handful of songs that do the same thing for me. best version i think is the rust never sleeps live version. in the live recordings the band does a great backing vocal harmony that totally makes the song amazing. i always thought it to be about the revolution. only thing is the numbers on the side of the boat that may date the song otherwise. cant argue with the use of the color red though in the song to mean red coats |
