The Birthday Massacre – Happy Birthday Lyrics 18 years ago
A while ago, while listening to this song, I got imagery in my head that related vaguely to the Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allen Poe. In that story there's a masquerade party, though it's not a birthday party. I may be misremembering, but doesn't Prospero or whomever chase the Red Death through all the rooms, to the one that is red like blood, before removing the mask, and then everyone dies? That's what I thought of when I heard "now he chases me to my room in my black and red dress"; you know. XD This probably makes no sense.

The Dresden Dolls – Shores of California Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song IS sarcastic, and meant to be a little funny; it exaggerates stereotypes. The Dresden Dolls are definitely not the sort of people to hold these stereotypes as true, considering they don't fit into them well themselves. & whoever made the thing about how in Lysistra the women do hold the emotional need above the sexual one and reverse for the men, I agree, but I don't think way to much should be read into that line. Really, by that point, that lyric sounds rather silly; the whole song does. Sarcastic but in more of a poking-fun way than a cynical way; a bit different from the standard Dresden Dolls themes. XD
Also, a note on the (was it trytaker's?) comment that songs by this band seem to cast sex in a negative light - I'd like to mention there's an interview with Amanda, the songwriter, and there's actually a question and response concerning this:
Q: Let's talk about sex. Listening to the lyrics of your songs, sex isolates rather than connects. And at times, there's a brutality and a deviancy about it. What is the personal origin of that kind of perspective?

AP: Well, the first important thing to know about my particular style of songwriting is that I tend to write about topics that are inherently conflicted and dark. And I think that people are often really surprised that I'm a pretty relaxed, balanced, happy person. I can be that way because I'm outputting all of this heavily charged, dramatic, isolated kind of music. When I really want to sit down to play the piano and pour my heart out in a song, it's usually because I'm upset about something. I don't ever write songs about the fantastic, loving, emotional sex that I've had. I don't write songs when I'm just gazing at the sky on a beautiful day - it's just not a song topic for me. Really, in that moment, I don't get anything out of it except the pure enjoyment of the moment, so I just want to actually enjoy the day.
I forget the url of the interview, otherwise I'd post it. Help?

The Dresden Dolls – The Gardener Lyrics 18 years ago
I mostly agree with iggy1110 on the lyrics corrections; however both my recording and the version when I heard them perform have slightly different lyrics from even that (out, not around; ARE wilting rather than AREN'T; plus parts of the song were in a different order...) Besides that...
There's actually a neat thread in the Shadowbox (the Dresden Dolls' official forum) where someone posted the lyrics, and they tried to discern what the actual lyrics were and started discussion the meaning. There was a neat idea that it's about the relationship between God and Jesus (cast in a very negative sense), which if you think about it makes sense. Here's the thread if anyone wants to look at it (I think you can read it without an account): http://www.theshadowbox.net/forum/index.php?topic=2448.0
