Menomena – Muscle'n Flo Lyrics 16 years ago
I was just about to say something along those lines...about how the song is about male prostitution or a drug addiction.

The lines: "Make a call/ make some cash/ make your mark/ make it last
tiny scores/ tiny rooms/ lofty goals/ met too soon/ too soon" says it all, especially if you think of it as a sexual encounter. (ask if you don't understand what i mean)

In the morning he looks at himself in the mirror and looks at what he's worth, perhaps someone who lacks value after a night of prostitution. Then he gives a justification by saying although he is not young, he still has much more to experience in life. Then once it becomes night, he has "stumble" to "pick up [his] hustle", meaning he uses this sexual activity--usually performed at night--to get by.

Later on, he states that he knows his actions are sinful when he calls himself "a broken man". There is a sense of guilt when he says that his heartbeat is "unrest" and wishes for Jesus to wash his feet-- symbolic for a forgiveness of his unholy actions.

I would also like to add that the pronunciation is probably similar to 'phenomena' but replace the ph with an m.

Mates of State – You Are Free Lyrics 17 years ago
I knew that it wasn't just:
"Your hands they know We're nearing the end"

So I listened to the song, and this is what I came up with. it may night be accurate, but it's pretty close:

you oughta lay down low
covered in packs of snow

guy:
i had a dream last night
that we were walking in fright
covered up all the years that soon became clear
and got all the tears we can cry

girl:
with arms below
............keep you warm
covered hands they know
......................................

we're nearing the end

The song talks about being "covered in packs of snow", then after that it mentions the hands being covered and warm. It makes me think that although she thinks he should be buried in snow, he should still be warm. It's as if she's mad at him for having to break up and she wants him out of her sight, but she still wants him to be happy.

Mates of State – Get Better Lyrics 17 years ago
i think sometimes people get so caught up in serious matters, e.g. politics, that occasionally you have to step aboard a less serious boat and let your mind take a break. the color schemes will brighten matters up a bit and take allow your mind to escape or lighten up, even if it doesn't solve the problem.

it's rejuvenating, like a new season.
at this particular moment, autumn is approaching and everyone is so caught up in the election. it makes me think that people should relax and enjoy the color schemes as they are arriving.

Animal Collective – Banshee Beat Lyrics 18 years ago
At the beginning it sounds like there is a crackling in the backgound. When it says, "There'll be time to fish fry for letters by yours truly" it makes me think that they broke up and now someone is burning all the letters they wrote.

Animal Collective – Bees Lyrics 18 years ago
I like what Slow Down the World said:
"Possibly in this song the bees think they're taking their time but from our perspective they move *violently, so sudden- so scary, so wild -yet so articulate."
At first I was wondering why the song was so slow in the beginning because it didn't sound "sudden", "violent", "scary", or "wild" at all. But it makes more sense when you put it that way because then the bees are the ones speaking. "I'll take my time" then makes more sense with how slow the song is.

Kudos to Rabashinko as well.

Animal Collective – The Purple Bottle Lyrics 18 years ago
The drums in the beginning definitely sound like his beating heart.

His obsession (or infatuation) is causing him to speak extremely fast.
I also believe that his obsession is causing him to feel nauseous: "Make me sick sick sick to kiss you and I think that i would vomit".
Then he says:
"Crush high then i go and take some pills
Cause i cant do all of my dos and still feel ill".
I would say that the 'crush high' is making him feel sick, so he takes medicine to make himself feel better so the high will last longer.

When the songs says, "Sometimes you're quiet and sometimes I'm quiet..." the tone of the song sounds nervous- like the feeling you get when you can't think of anything to say because you are so nervous.

Then during and after the part: "Can I tell you that you are the purple in me?..." He speaks slower maybe because he wants tell the person how he feels without sounding too insane.

Then at the end when he starts with, "the crush high...," the way it is sung also makes him sound really giddy to give a better idea of what the crush feels like.

Animal Collective – Flesh Canoe Lyrics 18 years ago
In the beginning when "young red bird" is used, red could symbolize love and and a bird could be someone who tosses from one place to the next. Then he describes his thoughts as tossing back and forth, which made me think of a bird's swooping motion.
he is reassuring himself of how normal these feelings are- "they're just natural feelings"- because he can't decide whether he should move towards- what he wants (emotional feelings) and what is right (rational thoughts). Then it sounds like his friends are telling him what is right, but he's not sure if he should follow it. He is confused but is later reassured by the one he admires.
