i still dont know what any of DST's songs are about really, but it seems they have a sociological/psychological aspect to them. Not quite politically geared, but more towards individuals affected by societal injustices. Listening to their music just gives me the feeling of someone lost in a big, cold, dark city (boston probably) |

additionally; if this song is indeed about the authors childhood, then it is not a normal tale of a child of an alcoholic father. This song has lots of anger, but also includes sympathy for the father doing the drinking, as he appears to be a character who, no matter how hard he tries, always ends up screwing things up. The father is not just a drunk who abandoned his family, he still tries to be a good father. It also apears that he is still married to his wife, and is present in the family. He never deflects any blame to his wife or children, it is a very apologetic song. Regardless of if it is the father or the son (or both) writing the song, it is true that the writer has his own alcohol problem, and has a fair amount of regret and guilt in his life. |

i hate your dogs has a good point. If you look at all of the songs on Robbers and Cowards, they are all, to some degree, about confusion and dissarray, the writer of the song tends to have something wrong with them in each song (St John: death penalty, Hospital beds: incurable illness). This song, like all of their songs, is ambiguous as to who is the subject of the song. I think the writer could be reflecting on his past as well as his present-- as many children of alcoholics develop their own alcohol problems. Also, alcohol tends to impair memory, and this song could be a meshing together of past memories and current problems, or just represent total confusion and chaos in someones life |
