Completely agree with Prabbit. This song actually gives me this "peak experience" you're talking about. It's just perfect in every way. The structure, the vocals, the instrumentation. Just... gorgeous. Heavenly beautiful. I find it a very beautiful thing that the song actually makes me feel and experience this harmony, ecstasy, integration, perfectness they're singing about. Actually there are 2 parts in the song where John references Khalil Gibran's Sand and Foam. There's the part that goes "Half of what I say is meaningless; but I say it so that the other half may reach you." as others have stated before. Then in Gibran's poem: "When Life does not find a singer to sing her heart she produces a philosopher to speak her mind." becomes "When I cannot sing my heart, I can only speak my mind" in Julia. Sand and Foam is an incredible piece of literature. I think John must have been fond of it, because as I was reading it, I really felt the influence it had on John. I somehow felt John's presence through the words of the poem. |

over-developement, destroying nature by building and building... like everyone before said. "switch on summer from a slot machine" climerguy's interpretation makes sense.. this line makes me feel like everything has become so mecanical.. and relying on technology (summer's supposed to come naturally not with a switch)... it could also mean that we dont wait for things anymore, we're using technology to get what we want, whenever we want "will u make us laugh, will u make us cry will u tell us when to live, will you...." could be abt war like someone said before... but i feel its about how society controls individuals. maybe how we're becoming machines, being told how to behave, what to feel.. its all part of the mecanisation of society. maybe its wrong but thats the way i see it anw great song by cat |

an amazing song. it could fit as an unrequited love/a relationship that couldnt work, or for a child who died at birth.. for the part: "For the hearts that never played in tune. Like a lovely melody that everyone can sing, Take away the words that rhyme it doesn't mean a thing": apol is probably right. "he compared his life to a melody without the so called RHYME it will not form a beautiful song without this two. the person actually meant it should have been on the almost famous soundtrack (CD). it IS in the movie and aplainmorning was saying that it is in the movie but not on the soundtrack which is weird cuz its an amazing song. but i guess they had to choose between tiny dancer and this, and tiny dancer plays a bigger part in the movie (bus scene). there. and all the comments here are great.. the harshness of life in NYC, how ppl run through you,... A friend gave him the Majnun and layla (majnoun means crazy in arabic), a story about unrequited love. Layla was born. Clapton said he used these names in a way to hide, to write freely about it. Jim Gordon (the dominos' drummer) jst wrote the piano coda, which clapton like so much that he convinced him to add it to the song Derek and the dominos are an amazing band, specially with Allman. its a shame they only released one album. |

A masterpiece. though maybe not my NUMBER 1 DS song, i think its DS biggest achievement music-wise (lyrics are gr8 too). the only-piano parts, the solos, the 1st minute (flute?), the transition between slow parts and fast rhytmic parts, until the last build-up. Brilliant. |
