New Order – In A Lonely Place Lyrics 18 years ago
This (along with Ceremony) was one of two Joy Division songs "left" to New Order, and the lyrics are Ian Curtis'--which never fail to give me a chill when I listen to them.

The title, as I recently found out, refers to the 1950 Humphrey Bogart film noir classic, which I suspect gives more insight into the lyrics.

I suspect Bernard Sumner knew more about drug dependency than you give him credit for. It was the 80s, after all, and New Order were a seriously hard partying band. I've seen enough published interviews with Barney to know he was a heavy E user. That's not smack (as he says himself) but it's also nothing to be scoffed at.

And I suspect Hooky will eventually be back. They've been through this before. It may take awhile, but I've seen much more hostile bands reunite.

New Order – Temptation Lyrics 18 years ago
On the lyrics--there are quite a few different versions, depending on which version of the song you're listening to. For instance, on the 1987 Substance version, the opening line is "Heaven, a gateway, a hope." And for some real fun, check out the lyrics used in the live version on the 511 DVD (the Taras Shevchenko concert, very very early version of this song). They clearly weren't quite done yet at that point.

For me, this song is about a guy I wanted to date (and eventually did date) in 1988.

New Order – Chosen Time Lyrics 18 years ago
Like a lot of the songs on Movement, this one, I think is very much a product of Ian Curtis' death, but this one seems more personal. Bernard Sumner probably had closer contact with Curtis in the last couple of months of his life than any of the other band members, and I think this one is a "I would have helped if you'd just have let me" kind of thing.

New Order – 5 8 6 Lyrics 18 years ago
Absolutely love this song. The bass line (which I believe is synth + Peter Hook together) has this great growly feel to it, and yep, it does have a lot in common with Blue Monday.

I don't think there's any deep meaning to the lyrics, but they match well with the song.

New Order – Blue Monday Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't think it's that they didn't care about Curtis, but they were a bunch of somewhat immature young men who were simultaneously pissed that Curtis' death killed Joy Division and angry that they'd lost a friend. And it took them a very long time to make peace with that.

As for the meaning of the song--I think it's deliberately opaque, so that it can be "about" a lot of things. I think "Blue Monday" (the title) may indeed refer to the day after Curtis' suicide, but like with many New Order songs, the title doesn't completely go with the song.

New Order – Your Silent Face Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm thinking it's about the evolution of the band after Curtis' death--the struggle to find their direction, the experiences with recording Movement (which is one of the most uneasy albums I've ever heard, much as I love it for that very reason), maybe even Barney's struggle to write lyrics and find his own voice. "Sound formed in a vacuum" might refer to the process of recording in a studio vs. playing live.

New Order – Ceremony Lyrics 18 years ago
I obviously like this song quite a lot. I suspect it may relate to the breakup of Ian Curtis' marriage, but there is probably more going on there, as there usually is with his lyrics.

I'm not sure whether it was this one or "In a Lonely Place" that was the "official" last song, but "Ceremony" is a little more oblique about things. "In a Lonely Place" gives me shivers in that respect. One writer called it "evil."

I adore the New Order version, but there is an incredible energy to the JD version on "Still" (the one where you can barely hear the singing for most of the song) because the band has a relentless driving feel to it. The funny thing is--on the demo version on the Heart and Soul box set, Ian Curtis is really struggling with the lyrics--they seem a bit too high pitched for his voice (granted, he's not exactly in a happy place at that point, and I suspect he didn't have the melody down yet)--but it's almost as if the song was written for someone else to sing--someone with a slightly higher-pitched voice...
