| Forgive Durden – Genesis (feat. Casey Crescenzo) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Wtfzorz is right. It's two people singing, the second is definitely Casey Crescenzo of The Dear Hunter. | |

This song has been one of my favorites for over six years now. Over time, as I learn more about it, it just keeps getting better and the lyrics more brilliant. I've found that this song is about a girl suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder. Look it up on Wikipedia and read more about it if you're one of the people who say you relate to this song or know somebody who does. Borderlines are typically female, have a rough childhood usually of abuse from the father and/or the mother. They tend to idolize people and put them up on some grand pedestal. When that person lets them down (which is inevitable; the expectations are too high) they become devalued and the girl feels hurt and betrayed. This pattern of black-and-white thinking causes the girl to use many defense mechanisms to protect her from that pain and usually comes off as tough and tends to push others away before they can do the same to her. Sadly, the girl often depends on these other people so much and needs them more than anything - it's sad to see someone who consistently does this to themselves. It's the whole "I hate you! Don't leave me!" attitude and if you know someone like this you've probably commented on their volatile emotions. Borderlines also have a tendency to be impulsive, chemically dependent, self-mutilators, and can not control their anger. Overall, they're seen as "out of control." There's plenty more to be said about this song and BPD. Look into it, and you'll grow to appreciate this song in it's entirety. |

| yeah steve, i added that comment only having listened to the cd for just a short while and getting all the lyrics down. it could very well be the p&p that killed her. this is truely one of his most vivid and beautiful songs casey has written, both lyrically and instrumentally, imo. | |
| The Dear Hunter – The Church and the Dime Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| i always interpreted the "let them all fold" lines as ways of saying that the women and the clients of the dime are folding their morals and choosing this hedonistic life of prostitution. the "breath in, breath out" kind of captures the mood - the intimacy, rush, and sexual energy of the dime. The chorus acts as a call from the pimp to give in and join "the fun" | |
| The Dear Hunter – His Hands Matched His Tongue Lyrics | 17 years ago |

"his hands matched his tongue" - in this song I think it's about how he's going to keep his tongue in check and not ask his mother about her life and his, although it's pains him to do it he believes it is best. So his hands are matching that, his actions are kept in check as well. It's still a bit confusing to me though. Is it possible that this song is being sung from Ms. Terri's point of view up until the "one day she'll be gone"? Or maybe the first verse from her point of view? It fits for me in my head... "the serendipitous discern" and finally finding happiness albeit her regrets fits with this point in the story. |

I don't think he's been experimenting with hookers. In Act 2 he mentions that Ms. Leadings hands were the first he'd ever felt. He's just a boy, after all. I think it is about him wishing he knew more about his mother, Ms. Terri (who happens to be a mystery since she hides everything from him). He regrets that he doesn't know much about her and I think Casey is singing in pain "Someday she'll be gone" because the boy will never ask his mother for the truth... and will never be able to find out once she dies. The first song in Act 2 is about his mother being killed, by the way. |

Kangaroo_cury is right I think. Casey finds the letter written by the dear hunter, this is why it's about a message in a bottle because they never actually get to who their intended. Casey reads the first message and reads about this man who gives up a woman. "She must have been so glad for him to throw it out." IT being the message that the dear hunter apparently threw out. Casey realizes that since he found this message in a bottle, the girl this letter was written to never got it. Further down the beach Casey finds another bottle with a letter in it. It also has tears streaking the page and he wonders if its from the dear hunter as he wrote it, or from Ms. Leading as she read it. I'm not sure what happened to Ms. Leading, but Casey sings about how she is probably better off now. He's taking a "everything happens for a reason" approach, or just can't bear to hear about this little tragic story he happened upon. |

I thew_matic is right. He loves her but resents it because he knows she's just a whore and that he should only be feeling lust. "you can't be caught red handed if you're not red handed" is him telling himself that he can't really be in love. He's in denial of his true feelings. "My darling I would never say those words to you" = I would never tell you that I love you. "... get to work" is him just being arrogant or mean in that he's now saying it was all just sex and had no meaning to him or her. I really think the majority of this song is about regret of what happened and him trying to get over her, which he apparently does later on in Act II. |

Now that we got that sorted out... what's this song really about? Is it him still mourning his mother, Ms. Terri, after the incident with Ms. Leading? Or is it about Ms. Leading? |

| The Dear Hunter – Smiling Swine Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
The first Act I was about Ms. Terri, a whore, and her son, the dear hunter. In the beginning of Act II Ms. Terri is raped and murdered and the dear hunter leaves him home and finds Ms. Leading. He's infatuated with her (love or lust, not sure) because she reminds him of his mother ("Mimicking the matriarch"). In this song he leaves the Dime and still has Ms. Leading. The smiling swine is the name that the dear hunter gives to the pimp/priest (one character who does both for a living). |

| Is it possible that the dear hunter was the one who raped and killed her? I've only really listened to (AND LOVE) Act II, and as far as I can tell, it wouldn't be too out of character for him at all. Thoughts from someone who knows more about the story in Act I? | |
