Underoath – It's Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door Lyrics 17 years ago
To start, I believe this song is about a car crash. Not necessarily a true story, but a reminder to us all that it only takes 5 seconds for our lives to change; for better or worse, and in this case it was for the worse. There is no doubt that this is a Christian band, and the way I perceive most religious people to be is a natural preacher. I dont believe, however, that the driver killed himself, nor took out his girl on purpose. I imagine the boyfriend in the hospital, barely alive, while she is in the operating room. I imagine that he understands they may not make it and at the same time understands that it may be for the better.

"I've been up at this all night long,
I've been drowning in my sleep,
I've prayed for your safe place,
And its time for us to leave"

I believe that he is having an out of body experience and is watching him and his girl dying. He's telling us that he see's it happening and is praying for them but may realize that its time to go into the next life.

"Time is running, its running on empty and the gas is running out
I've decided that tonight is the night
That I set love aside
Full speed ahead this seems to be the place
I've seen this once before
Planned perfection sought in my dreams
Hoping this would take you home"

He's explaining to us and himself that there is no more life left for him. He's decided that he's going to leave his body and his girls body to go to a place that he's only ever dreamed about. He's telling us that he's searched his dreams for a perfect place(Heaven).

"My knuckles have turned to white
There's no turning back tonight
So kiss me one last time"

His knuckles have turned white from his hands in the prayer position and grasping on so tightly. I dont think this has to do with driving fast or holding tight to the wheel with the anticipation of hitting something. They're both now going to the "light" now and there's no turning back...Give me one last "Real" kiss while you are here with me.

"Around this turn where the cross will cast your shadow
The people will all gather
To remember such a day
Where the flames grew as high as trees
And the world stopped for you and me"

The people will always remember where they died. The cross that will bear the shadow litterally means a cross that someone had put up as a memorial to them. He's saying that their souls will always remember that particular spot.

"I will now bring new meaning to the word alone
Endless nights of dreaming of life
And the days we should have spent here"

A new meaning to the word "ALONE" can mean a variation of things. It could be that they are no longer with the ones they love, or their souls are always drawn back to the scene, or anything that we as the audience can use to identify and relate with. He remembers how they would dream of a life together and the things that should have taken place.

"Glass shatters and comes to a halt
I thought we'd be there by now
I thought it would be so much quicker than this"

I take this line as having two meanings, and if I am right then I give Underoath great respect of being great song writers. 1) He's saying that he would have thought and wished that they were at the their destination they were driving to already. and 2) If he is having an out of body experience he's wondering whats holding him back from meeting god and going to heaven and as he's looking down on his lifeless body he thinks he should have been there already.

"Pain has never been so brilliant
I made sure you were buckled in
Now you can walk hand in hand
Hand in hand with him"

He's saying that with what is in store for them after his death, the pain is worth it, There has never been anything that hurt to him so much that it felt good. He's saying that he went to her body and made sure he prayed for her and and that she is going to be with "HIM" (God) and never have a pain in her life again.

In the end I believe he is telling us that he only had an out of body experience and did not in fact die. His life however is now changed and all it took was 5 seconds. This is my interpretation of a song that are not my words. This is what I imagine when I hear it and the great thing about music, is that a Great Band will leave the meaning up to us as the listeners.

Tom Petty – Learning to Fly Lyrics 18 years ago
Here's the deal. This song is definately about the first time he FREE-BASED CRACK. First off you dont fly a plane starting off in the streets, there's no religion here and we all know Tom was into drugs. Agreed every song doesnt have to be about drugs...but this is.

"Well I started out down a dirty road
Started out all alone"
Who knows what drugs he got into before he starts out in the song thats not for us to say, but he is definately saying that whatever he was on had him twisted and he felt as if he was in his own world with no friends. So he decided to give crack a whirl and when his "flight" started...it was just him and his mind...all fucked up.

"The good old days, may not return. The rocks might melt and the sea may burn."
Once you do crack...there aint no comin back. To make crack you need to get cocaine into a "rock" form and then you melt it down into a liquid on a spoon. then burn the bottom of the spoon and the liquid burns giving off smoke and fumes and vapors that you inhale.

"Well some say life will beat you down
Break your heart, steal your crown
So I've started out, from God knows where
I guess I'll know when I get there"
Life gets to everyone, including the rich and famous and the rock stars, and now he's so tore up he doesnt even know where he started and how he came to be like this. The only thing he can do is ride out the high and see where he end up.

"I'm learning to fly, but I ain't got wings
Coming down is the hardest thing"
He's now on crack and high as hell. Planes have wings, birds have wings; he's neither one, nor is he an angel. So how else could he be flying? And anyone that isnt ignorant can tell you that crackheads usually stay crackheads because its so hard to get off the drug.

I am not a crackhead, nor am I ignorant. This is what i perceive this song to be about and all the signs are pointing in that direction

A Static Lullaby – Hang 'em High (Album Version) Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is about a broken friendship and a broken partnership. If you know anything about ASL then you would know they have gone through many changes from their original line-up. They have gone through many drummers; some of which include: Brett Dinovo (original drummer), Ben Newshem, Jarod Alexander and now Tyler Mahurin. Also they now have a new Bassist, who replaced Phil Pirrone and a new guitarist who replaced Nate Lindeman. When they're describing a car crash they are actually talking about a car crash. A while back before they made the new line-up, Phil Pirrone was in a severe car accident in Chino, California(ASL hometown). After his recovery he soon realized that the music he was playing was not what he wanted to keep going forward with. He and Nate, who happen to be great friends, decided to start a new band named Casket Salesmen. This was hurtful to Joe and Dan and this song was the product of their loss. When interviewed, I believe, Joe admitted that he wrote these lyrics mostly about Phil.

"Its more than just loss, but its over."
The loss is Phil and Nate and perhaps ASL as we know it.....

"These past 5 years"
This is the amount of time the band had been together. If I'm not mistaken they all joined together around November 2002. This song was recorded in 2007....5 years.

"So individual"
Now Dan and Joe are left to mend the broke pieces of ASL and need to decide if going forward is the right decision to make. Or one can argue that its about Phil being so fond of himself that he's become "SO" Individual...Sarcasm at its best. I believe its both.

"We're giving up our lives for this Revolution"
They decided that they will stick with the name ASL and now they're going to come back and be badder than ever!

"These open wounds still burn"
Although they've decided to go forward they're explaining that it still hurts them.

"This is life in a car crash"
One event such as a car crash is what makes life so crazy and its up to you to decide what to do with it(life) and how to handle it(life) and yourself
