| The Magnetic Fields – Drive On, Driver Lyrics | 14 years ago |

Couple things: I think the lyric is 'It's such a pretty old ring' rather than 'little old ring'. Also, I just love the image of this rich Romantic bastard not getting what he wants. A wealthy man that is still capable of love is a beautiful thing. |

I agree with alexandranstrong that the song is not about the "black and white" of morality, but rather that we are being misled. I believe the best example, and perhaps the most striking line is this: "In the fine print they tell me what's wrong and what's right..." (as dictated by society, politics, parents) "and it comes in black and it comes in white, " (as in the fine print is written in both: the black that is obvious and the white that is secret and scamming us) "...and I'm frightened by those who don't see it" (a bit more wordplay, but he is scared by those who don't understand we are being manipulated, not by any fault of their own, but are being used for being so trusting.) |

| Dawn Landes – Kids In A Play Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I thought it went more cleverer: We are like kids in a play Set in the Victorian Age We only know what to say Because we practiced at home or we rehearsed on the bus Next to kids just like us Who couldn't help but think we were weird. (ha, ha, ha...Mmmmmmm) And I would open my mouth And you would cue me I'd start to speak of the South Like I'd been there and you would forget yourself As you mouthed my words I think it's your turn to leave and throw a fit And I will mumble and grieve in an aside It brings the crowd to their feet and almost makes you cry (Mmmmm....Yeaaah) (Ah, uh-ah, ah ah-uh, ah uh-uh-uh-ah-ah-ah) What if no one comes? What if we get bored? Will you fit my clothes? We should switch roles We are like kids in a play Set in the Victorian Age We only know what to say because we practiced at home Or we rehearsed on the bus Next to kids just like us Who couldn't help but think, they couldn't help it (Hey? You guys wanna start a playhouse?) |

Just a couple things: This song (which I can't get out of my head) reminds me quite a bit of Fast Train in that it anthropomorphizes the train as an object of affection, just as This Tornado Loves You becomes the obsessed, destructive, desperate ex-lover. Also, I hear: "I miss I miss How you'd sigh yourself to sleep When I'd rake the springtime Across't your sheets" Minor difference, but much more poetic sounding, don'tcha think? |

| Wow, guy. This is a fantastic analysis. I love it. Where does Neko say she doesn't write love songs? A distinct possibility, but does not seem quite probable to me. Maybe she's just being cheeky, using that wiked sense of humor that is why we love her. | |

I adore this song. Just discovered it, actually, but I wanted to add that one of the great lyrics in the song is "The Black Dahlia, she smiles and smiles" Wanted to point out that the Black Dahlia, when she was murdered, had a smile cut into her face from ear to ear. |
