I do think that the intro is far too long and indulgent, but the music is absolutely beautiful and haunting and it fits with the rest of the song. The lyrics and melody are both very simplistic and by themselves, not particularly impressive, but the combination is magic. Yeah. I've gotta say, I'm pretty impressed. I'll certainly be buying this album. |

Okay. This is tainted by personal experience. But. I think that the narrator of this song is already in a relationship, but he can't shake this other girl out of his head. It's natural to notice other people even if you are in a relationship, and he tries to convince himself that she's just another passing interest...but he knows that's not true. His obsession with her grows and grows and he wants so badly to act on it, but it would be wrong. Even thinking about her feels like a betrayal of the girl he's with, who he thinks he loves, so he doesn't even feel he should acknoweledge this crush to himself let alone anyone else...but it gets out of control, and one way or another he has to rid himself of it. He can either get her out of his life or get her out of his system. Either way, it's bad. And he knows it. And that knoweledge makes him want her more. |

I'm applying this to the situation that a friend of mine is currently in. He loves her completely, she claims to love him the same. He'll do whatever it takes to be with her, but she won't do the same. Or he doesn't feel that she will. He's frustrated and angry and hurt, because she isn't willing to do and give up what he is "so go on be your own star." The reason I think this song fits so well is that he almost soungs angry when he's singing most of it "I will meet you, will you meet me?" ..it sounds less like a question and more like an accusation. An "I love you more" sort of situation. And then there's the one part where his defenses break down and his voice sounds more tender and vulnerable, "you're a superstar in my eyes, in my eyes, look in my eyes." |

I'm going sort of a different direction on this one, mostly because I'm projecting my own feelings into it. I think it's about two friends falling in love. They each see in the other what no one else sees or appreciates - I have a friend who I'm falling for and I don't see how other girls can possibly have thrown him away and hurt him the way that they have. They've each seen the other go through one shitty experience and relationship after another, and now finally they've figured out that it's them - together they can go further than either of them have with others. They'll reach for the stars with each other when none of their past lovers would or could. I think the references to killing and burning and leaving the bodies behind are about moving on from the pain in their pasts. |
