I think the song is about holding on to a memory that's slipping away with time. The song itself is kind of documenting the beauty of the moment. He's capturing whatever he's feeling in the song, much like a videotape would capture a brief section of time. He knew it wouldn't last forever.. whatever that moment was, you can absolutely tell that it was deeply meaningful to him. For me though... when I turned 19, my then girlfriend and I used to just lie in bed all day. There were moments were we would just be. I get all these fucked up visualizations of just getting like... transported into the past. Unfortunately that point in time has moved on, and listening to this song transports me to back then. I have a feeling that songs as good as this can only be made with those type of experiences in mind. I don't think I've ever heard a more beautiful song in that way in my entire life. |

The song has many meanings, but the one that I understand is that it means life is short, but that might be my collective emotions at times when listening to this song. The lady is Death, and the piper is God. Understanding the last part of this song will give context to the rest of it. "And as we wind on down the road" Winding through life, going down the path of life, whatever you want to call life. "Our shadows taller than our soul." Either means it literally, like are bodies are bigger than are souls, because Plant felt small at the time, or he means the things around them, "our shadows" as possessions, and there casting a shadow over whats really important. It could mean many things but I think its the latter I described. "There walks a lady we all know" You've reached the end of the path of life, there walks death. "Who shines white light and wants to show" Everyone should know what the 'white light' is, and wants you to bring you towards it. "How everything still turns to gold." How the worst times in your life are irreverent, everything about existence is heaven because its the one thing that you can experience. Man thinks about his life before he dies, to the very moment he does, because it is the end of it. "And if you listen very hard The tune will come to you at last." You'll understand, can't really explain this one, nor Plant- but this understanding will make you let go. "When all are one and one is all" Separation from life- were everything becomes one in one instant. "To be a rock and not to roll." To exist without a body, but exist with a soul- so true separation of the mind and spirit at death, and full realization that the next part of your existence has began. |
