Just a correction: "But when you’re withdrawn It’s the closest thing To a someone who lies around you" should be "But when you're withdrawn It's the closest thing To assault when all eyes are on you" |

So if you don't know what those lines mean, what makes you think they are "the answer to the meaning of this song"? I think this is one of those Karen-isms or one of those metaphors only she knows the meaning to. It makes me think of how she refers to water in The Captain off of the Knife's Silent Shout. Also, "the tropics" refers to a region surrounding the equator from the Tropic of Cancer in the North to the Tropic of Capricorn in the South. In general use it means, on or near the equator. It stretches around the globe and the Amazon (home of the world's largest TROPICAL rain forest) is right smack dab in the middle. |

| I think you're right. The whole album has references to motherhood, which makes sense considering Karin just had her second baby right before making it. | |

| Sounds like "small feet in the hall" to me. | |

I think the "he" in this song is her brother (and other half of The Knife) Olaf. Apparently he is off in the tropics recording sounds of nature for the Charles Darwin opera they are working on. The whole song has a weirdly tropical vibe to it from the aural seascape (complete with sea gulls) at the end of the intro to the title "Coconut" and mention of a bungalow. The song itself starts as a wish to be someplace else, someplace more exotic with an "open atmosphere". At home the household is "strained". But, at the end I think she is saying its ok to enjoy the present. She's accomplished a lot and she's earned that cigar. As she's made clear on the album she's not done yet and there is more to come, but for now she is where she is and the future will sort itself out. Definitely my favorite track on the album. It's really cinematic and hopeful-- a perfect ending to a terrific album. |

| I always thought he was saying "hold me like a gun". For some reason I always really liked that image... | |

I can see this song being taken different ways by different people. Some see themselves as "metal hearts" or in danger of becoming them soon, and the lack of happiness that path has brought them. Others see people in their lives as the metal hearts instead of themselves. Either way it's a pretty clear description someone who is frustrated about their circumstances in life. Instead of doing something about it this person hides away and lets their true calling rot. They build a wall around their true selves and all that's left is a shell going through the motions. |
