This is the best vesion of this song I've heard. The Band is fabulous.

The Who – Baby Don't You Do It Lyrics 16 years ago
This is a great song and The Who does it well, but The Band's version (as "Don't Do It") is by far the best cover of this song I've ever heard.

Yeah it is, I really love the exaggerated accent.

The Band – Cripple Creek Lyrics 17 years ago
And I'm sixteen and adore The Band, which is all very well and good, but has nothing to do with the meaning of the song.

The narrator is a trucker or something like that, and required to travel. Bessie is his mistress who he loves for all her quirks (like tearing up his winnings from betting on a race). In the fourth verse, when the narrator says he'll call up his "big mama" but admits he'd rather see Bessie, he's presumambly speaking about his wife, although he prefers Bessie.

Gabriella Cilmi – Cigarettes and Lies Lyrics 17 years ago
"Cigarettes and lies" is a phrase from the chorus of "Hotel Song" by Regins Spektor.
Just throwing that out there.
