This is a great song and The Who does it well, but The Band's version (as "Don't Do It") is by far the best cover of this song I've ever heard. |

And I'm sixteen and adore The Band, which is all very well and good, but has nothing to do with the meaning of the song.
The narrator is a trucker or something like that, and required to travel. Bessie is his mistress who he loves for all her quirks (like tearing up his winnings from betting on a race). In the fourth verse, when the narrator says he'll call up his "big mama" but admits he'd rather see Bessie, he's presumambly speaking about his wife, although he prefers Bessie. |
