Danny Wilson – Mary's Prayer Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song, but when I read those lyrics I'm flooded with awful memories following the break-up of a 3 year college relationship - the demise occuring over the several shiftless months following graduation when I was seriously lacking confidence and perspective.

Aimless in Boston and tormented with guilt for my part in the break-up, I called her after she moved West. That line, "Everything is wonderful, being here is heavenly . . ." is so like her description of her new life, in her new town, with her new friends -without me. It was as if I had never been a part of her life ["Suddenly was washed away the Mary that I knew."]

Few things suck more than the regret and self-pity you feel when you realize just how much your ex has moved on, while your own life has been going nowhere.

The Cars – Why Can't I Have You Lyrics 17 years ago
A beautiful song about the pain of a lost love - neither Robert Smith nor Morrissey could have done better.

Thomas Dolby – One of our Submarines Lyrics 17 years ago
The greatest song Thomas Dolby ever produced. I first heard this song in March of 1983 on an eighth grade school trip from Connecticut to Washington, DC. I bought the cassette and listened to this one track on my Walkman probably 500 times over the course of a five day trip. Now, 24 years later, this song is as captivating as ever!

Timbaland – Apologize Lyrics 18 years ago
Wow - this song sure takes me back to some painful moments! There's nothing quite like the hell you experience the moment you realize you've done or said something that irrevocably alters, for the worse, an intimate and trusting relationship. Why is it that you don't always recognize the moment when love begins but you always know when it ends?

The [unofficial] video shot by Aaron Platt on YouTube is quite powerful as it depicts the destruction of quite simple, beautiful and yet fragile objects. The final image of a burning love letter tugs at my heart every time.

The Shins – Phantom Limb Lyrics 18 years ago
To me, this song has always been about the social isolation, low self-esteem and disconnect that almost all of us experience at some point in our teen years. These lyrics could easily be sung from the perspective of a female high school outcast - not unlike Ally Sheedy's character in The Breakfast Club.
