IMO, this song is more cut and dry than to be perceived by the lyrics. A person he/ she (subject) was in a relationship with wanted the princess-like, fairytale relationship. The perception that society, embodied by entertainment industry standards, holds as a "standard". People forget who they are. They're droned into who they should be... and act. This "subject" fell in love with a silhouette that eventually gave up on him/ her. My guess - cheating. (Don't know any other way). |

To me this song is about fucking up in life and coming close to losing a significant other. Then realizing that he needs to change his ways in order to keep that significant other. It's not that simple But I've needed this from the start To guide my way You will be ok (I think it's "to be ok") It has made life simple I have needed this from the start To wake up The second means that he has fallen so hard that he realizes his mistakes. It's like he learned something about himself. To me, the song is about life and death. How life has succumb to the way of 'life' itself. How we vuew what we are supposed to be. The title explains itself, in a metaphorical way of thinking. Especially when they play the 'Sit back and close your eyes'. It's a message to say to chill th F*** out. This is the life we are given. Relax.... I understand that this song is about air and how we humans take it for granted, but my interpretation of this is: It's about the loss of a loved one. Especially the last two lines is what makes it hit hard. I can relate. Well any way, that's my two cents. I don't care if you disagree. |

Ten thousand men sleep down with Davy Jones. With stolen treasure they tithe. If I remember correctly, Davy Jones is kinda like a pseudo acronym for Devil Jonah. And 'With the stolen treasure they tithe', meaning a tenth of something valuable. To give a tax on something valuable. Life is the treasure and should be valuable. (The tenth part I dont quite get, yet). The open water is a place where both the Devil and God live. 'The open water chills me to my bones but it's the only place that I feel alive', is like giving comfort and 'The open water is my only fear', meaning to fear God and the Devil. (Who wouldn't?) And 'To sail as long as I still have breath', meaning to live as long as he can in this world. The chorus seems pretty much self-explanitory. (playitloud253) 'Between the devil and the deep blue sea, I stare into the abyss. The open water is an awful thing, But I'm anxious 'til the anchor is aweigh.'
