I appreciate that the post starts with "What does this song mean to you?" It almost like a rorshach test. I think it is about forgiving someone of past indescretions, whether they be physical or emotional. There is a natural and chemical response to her lover. IE the lyric about the horse. If it werent for her incident with the horse in her own life, I might have thought it meant heroin. When things are moving in harmony they seem natural so there is a desire to believe in this. The brain then comes in and makes you question this belief. She is trying to decide whether to give in to this relationship and forgive. My thought is that she decides to keep the relationship with the understanding that she is still mad at him. The dress is a symbol of better times that he is reminded of and she wants to make sure that he doesn't forget that she is still mad. Check out the video. It is just people showing faces of sadness and tears. |

Wow, those are some great comments. I did catch the reference to Frost. I remember an interview when Leonard spoke about "The Traitor" and everytime I here this song, I think it speaks to the greater courage being accepting life as it is and not as we wanted it to be. He explains that this is the meaning in "The Traitor." It really comforts me to hear him talk about our percieved failures, being true courage. I think I will just slip into the masterpiece. |

One can not ignore the religious implications. I first heard this song in the eighties and was drawn to its melodic droning love session between bass and guitar. I think that it is so unimportant what this song meant to Robert Smith....look at what it has meant to so many others, including me. Having said that, I can't see how it is hopefull. He can't be speaking only of christianity though since he uses a metaphor from Mohammed. |

I'm sure that each person brings their own experiences to this song, but I cant get Peter Murphy out of my head when I listen to it. Its just so gothic and vampire like. Love the line about the wet mouth. It brings to me the image of a ghostly white face with blood in the mouth. |
