This is a very interesting song. It took me awhile to make sense of the lyrics but actually it's not that hard to understand. Here's my take. Taken from James' perspective at a time when he could not comprehend much the things that were going on around. Paul was a Pharisee determined to wipe out from the face of the earth the 'blasphemers' and went about persecuting Jews who believed Christ as the Messiah. He was even there at St. Stephen's stoning to death. On the road to Damascus Jesus appeared to him, became blind, then converted. His conversion was too much for the apostles back in Jerusalem to swallow. But he was what the early church really needed at the time, someone bold and relentless to spread the word of God. This made James nervous and scared. Who is this guy who goes about preaching about Jesus he didn't even live with the man? What if he preaches the wrong things? This guy was persecuting us mercilessly not so long ago and now suddenly proclaims he is God's own messenger? How is it possible that he has the conviction to speak about Jesus, he must be crazy for sure? "Changed the name of my brother Changed the things that he said" The early Christians were Jews (even Christ himself, a practicing Jew). The only thing that separated them from the rest of the Jews was their belief in Christ as the Jewish Messiah (Isaiah 53). But for Paul he preached Jesus not only as the Jewish Messiah but the universal savior, one with God / Son of God. Probably this was something new for the early Christians to understand. Anybody can be saved, not only the Jews, but the Gentiles as well (basically all other non-Jews who believed in Christ). Observance of strict Jewish traditions do not matter anymore. James, being part of the early Jewish Christians who were practicing Jewish customs probably was hesitant on this teaching. "Says he speaks to him But never even knew the man" James ranting about Paul claiming Christ to be talking to him and acts like he knows him all too much. "But I'd give my life for him" James professing his love for Christ. "Like water through my hands You'd give him any ending" Alot of things happened unexpectedly with Christ. It's like water flowing through your hands. You can't get a grip of it and you can never expect what will happen next. He died on the cross unfitting for a Messiah. Alot of the apostles thought that was the end of it. They would be back to fishermen again. But then three days later Jesus resurrected from death and appeared to them, with nail wounds and all. Then he went ascending to heaven. You can come up with alot of possibilities on what's going to happen next. "But if he's all you say would he fly from heaven to this world again" James trying to comprehend and asking, if he's all you say that he is the universal savior, would he fly from heaven to this world again? "Take whatever you're needing Take whatever you can We are broken from within Run to another land" The Nazarenes (early Christians, apostles included) in Jerusalem were persecuted by Jews, at a time of Roman occupation which made it more complicated. Life was hard for them and they were also not sure to remain in Jerusalem or venture outward and what God wills them to do. Shall they escape the persecution in the Holy Land and preach on to other lands? "Or is it just beginning" The apostles understood they were called for something greater. That this is just the beginning. They were happy to spread the word but at the same time, they knew they were bound to suffer. Faith held them together. "They took my brother They ripped him from me To twist his words as they did his body Denied his family" A description of what Jesus went through in his passion. The Jews also regarded him as a blasphemer for claiming to be the Messiah and that his teachings were against Mosaic Law. "Denied his beauty To lie him down at the feet Of those he couldn't save Couldn't save, couldn't save" The Jews that wanted him dead denied the beauty of Christ's teachings of love. Christ pointed out the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and how they were attached to worldly customs and traditions, and this was becoming of 'faith without works'. "Or is he still ascending" James still trying to process everything. Is there any conclusion to this anytime soon? Is Jesus coming back to the world soon? |

| IMO this song is about growing older. When we're in our twenties it seems like time is so fast and the world seems smaller to us, We often come to realize that we are powerless against time and we can't do anything to slow it or pause it and savor our youth, stay this way forever. Saturday is the last day of the week. And now we're in the Saturday of our youth, but we're not all alone. Life is about change and we have to accept it. We have to stop looking back and pity ourselves for not being the way we used to be, else we can never find happiness again because we live in the past. "Let's see something new.. something new". Let's look forward and enjoy what life has to offer ahead. You're not alone and we're all in this together. Nice song. | |

I have been familiar with this song for years now but I have just learned to play this song on the guitar and want to sing this to girls. Anyways this is a very sad song and someone on the first page said "..does pain make great art or what?", this reminds me of what the great Russian cellist and conductor Slava Rostropovich said, "Suffering is essential for art. You know creators, composers, need a palette for life, a color for life. If he (is) only happy with his life, I think that he (does not fully) understand what is happiness." Great song. |
