I don't think the crying and kissing are acts of rebellion. There's nothing socially unacceptable about them. Besides, the lyrics don't say he FEELS sad or romantic ("fond but not in love") - they're all about going through the motions.
No, I get a definite "he loved Big Brother" vibe from these lines. I think they're the ultimate proof of what a good little drone this song is about: even his emotions are correct. He'd actually look less normal, stable and obedient if he went around like Spock all the time rather than displaying his "true" feelings. |

The parts that begin "I'd love to take you home with me" are meant to be romantic, in a twisted way. The singer can't make sense of what a relationship means in right-wing Christianity. To love a woman is to marry her. To marry her is to own her, dominate her and finally crush her spirit. No wonder his serenade ends up sounding like a death threat. |

The verse about "breaking out...demolishing the day" makes me think the literal meaning of this song has to do with prisoners. Maybe they're working on a chain gang or digging an escape tunnel. Whatever, it's probably not important exactly what these men are working on--what really comes through when you hear it sung is their determination, the tremendous struggle and the grim odds they're facing. These lyrics could be about the hardest parts of anyone's life. |

It's about taking a risk calmly and staying hopeful for a comeback even after the gamble doesn't pay off. I can't decide if the character's meant to be a good example or not (I was with her until she decided the way out of a hole was to dig deeper!) |

Literally, it's about a defective baby left to die. But I think the true point of it is the contradiction between the will to live (the defiant 1st part of the chorus) vs. how cheap life is if you look at it from a certain angle (the 1st verse + the end of the chorus). |

This is about totalitarianism--not the jackbooted kind, the kind that preys on the ignorance of the public. The main character says he's a traitor, a spy and a propagandist (a Volksempfaenger was a radio that the Nazi government subsidized in order to spread their message). He can play on heroism and public appeal, but those are a front for what he's really up to. And there is no escaping him because he's everywhere and can put a price on any head. He gets away with it because no one knows enough to put up resistance. |

This is a deeply sarcastic song. It's condemning God for failing his worshipers...."Oh, it must be SO hard to be you, all omnipotent and you can't even get your own creation right." (your kingdom does not come, your will is not done etc.) Listen to the '04 version. The lyrics sound so understanding but Alex's voice drips venom. |
