my friend passed away from melanoma august 13th of this year. he lost his battle after a second tumor was found in his left parotid gland two years ago. because of circumstance i had not spoken with my friend for nearly 4 years, though i saw him often the last three weeks of his life. initially around january 2002 he was diagnosed with melanoma after a mole was removed from his neck. at that time we believed the cancer was removed and had received a bill of good health. two months later we received our EMT licenses and worked together for another 3 and half years. he would later confess if he had died, he would have wanted this song played at his funeral. as fun as driving an ambulance can be, to some its only a stepping stone, sometimes to something different. he found his calling somewhere else. he would move on and start a family with a wonderful woman and was buried in a very beautiful, yet traditional funeral. i played this song to myself for him soon after. only because i knew at one time he wanted it done. |

to me this song is about a break up. though the day turns to night the city keeps the streets well lit. i think this could be an analogy that she is like the day time, old fashioned and ready for something serious while he is still into the night life. he wants more of her and wants to tell her that. he gets drunk and talks to his girl who has decided a long time ago that she doesn't want him any more. the brilliance of the song are the arrows.... each arrow represents some one new. it will take a while to get over her. probably a few girls and relationships later. |

this has such a beautifull and soft melody. i have the impression that this is about having a "closure" conversation with your ex. being at the bar and just realizing how sad everything is. it explores the painfull elements of those first few weeks of being single again; insomnia, depression, seclusion, and just overwhelming apathy. just the usual breakup emotions and coelesced inscecerity of it all. this is as good as morrissey-esque can get. bob nanna's poetry is such a gift. |

have you ever broken up with somebody and listen to a song you both loved for the first time again? i think this song is just about that emotional reaction to the way that song makes you feel. the first verse is about listening to your favorite song, be it a breakup song (morrisey?) or just something that reminds you of them. you know you need to get over that person and that you'll find someone else... again. the second verse is specific. it sounds like the person he was with had a very passionate relationship. the chorus talks about how they thought that each other were the "one". everybody fools themselves once in a while perhaps all of the time. all well. i love this song. i never knew this ep exsisted until about 9 months ago. i immediatly feel head over heals for these songs. |

the morning after... yeah the girl friend has totally ripped into him while they were breaking up. telling him she needs to move on or that he wasnt what she thought he was or what ever. i try not to find relevance in my life with other people... wait i take that back. i am a huge sucker for that kinda shit. for what its worth elliott was a master at reflecting his emotions in these songs. what he really means isnt the point. it sucks that he was hurting all the time but this whole thing was just him getting it off of his back. he was a beautifull man. |

this song was written only about a few months before they broke up... and who knows which guy in the band wrote the lyrics and who in the band they could be about. friends stabbing friends i think is obvious. also this song being political doesnt make much sense to me. the holy roman empire and the roman empire are two COMPLETLY different nations. what most people dont know is that the holy roman empire is what germany considered the first reich. well, betryal among friends and life long band mates is what i think this song is about "holy roman style" being a direct comparision... a few of the early german nations backing out and leaving the northern italian states all alone as the holy romans with not much left to do. but then again..... |
