I agree that the song conveys the childhood desire to be loved and the realization that his mother wasn't a very good person after all. I also find the connections to the ancient Roman story intriguing. However, I feel that these aspects of the song have already been analyzed. One point I would like to add is that Romulus is the name of town where the Detroit airport is located. Since this song is at least partially be about an absent, always shifting mother, it seems appropriate that an airport town would be its title. |

One thing I noticed in the lyrics of the song is that it has both a "you" and a "she"....perhaps the you is the devil and the she is the angel..she is the 'rain cloud' in the desert sky that gives him water and who sees him coming home... |

In the Joshua Tree Deluxe edition, the booklet included shows the original handwritten lyrics to the song. Most of the lyrics listed are the ones sung on the album..but I did notice this change..."I want to reach out and touch the flame"---"I've got to break out..holy spirit spirit like a flame"--which seems to show that heaven..or atleast God's Kingdom on the earth was atleast one of the song's subjects. |
