| Ulrich Schnauss – Goodbye Lyrics | 18 years ago |

This song is utterly brilliant from start to finish. While some songs have made me cry before, I was usually already in a sad state before listening to it. This one is different, I can't suppress my tears in any way, especially when paying attention to the lyrics. It's beyond my comprehension. I've been deciphering the song for the past half hour. I think I'm pretty close. In my opinion it's clearly about dying (e.g. after a long struggle, a terminal disease etc.) and accepting it ("take away all the fear, and let me fall asleep"). That's what the fadeout at 2:30 symbolizes. The person who spoke up to that part has just passed away. The next part "She will never return" is contemplation by the lover/friend who was with her in her last moments, saw it happening. I'm still not sure what the first line of the chorus is. At 3:59 it's clearly not "Goodbye". "You know" sounds possible, but I'm still unsure. I wished that Ulrich himself would chime in to fill in the gaps. This song wouldn't be out of place at a funeral. Too bad that the lyrical content is so incomprehensible, although the vocoder surely adds to the atmosphere. Lyrics below: a single question mark symbolizes a missing word; if followed by something between brackets, that's a possible substitution for the question mark in front of it. --- heaven, hell take me back to the dream ? life has been; just once answer my prayer take away all the fear and let me fall asleep let me fall asleep fall asleep you ? (know?) you have to let it go don't cry so hard to say goodbye she will never return never again be part of what has once felt so secure ? ? as it is getting oh so cold it is getting cold getting cold you ? (know?) you have to let it go don't cry so hard to say goodbye so hard to say goodbye you have to let it go so hard to say goodbye |
