| just look at the lyrics "Soul gets squeezed out". What happens when you murder someone? (if you believe that we have spirits or souls). | |

At first, I used to take the song fairly literally. However, the more I listen to it the more I sense that the narrater is someone with an imagination. Perhaps the nuclear scene is actually a creation of the smart kid (in his mind, etc). I know someone mentioned something about a metaphor for isolation. Maybe the "smart kid" is mentally creating the fantasy in his own world (as a way to escape). When you hear lines like "there was a war but I must have won" and you picture the imagination of a child, it makes sense (e.g. "I'm triumphant over this world"). There's a sense of imaginitive innocence--if you accept the premise that it is a mental creation of the smart kid. They say smart kids are the best at visualizing and imagining things. This is how I am seeing the song more and more--a innocent, slighly psychotic daydream/fantasy of a smart kid. Since I have been seeing it that way it has conveyed even more emotion and power. Anyone can see it anyway they want to. |
