Neil Diamond – Sweet Caroline Lyrics 17 years ago
The chorus of this song brings back good memories... "Hands, touchin' hands, reachin' out, touchin' me, touchin' you". They don't throw those '70s parties anymore; where thirty or so people drop their clothes and pick up their drugs at the entrance.
I wonder. Did Neil Diamond attend the same parties? I can't recall, it was always semi-dark.

Kelis – Milkshake Lyrics 17 years ago
To analyse song lyrics, rap lyrics and the like, we must look to the chorus; the words repeated most often, the most important statements; and in this song we find:

"My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard, and their like."

So, Kelis attracts not only boys, but also their 'like'.

Now, 'boys' is a broad term, encompassing young men, so whom else can she possibly mean? Who is 'like' boys?

The answer is clear. Kelis is 'coming out', to use the common idiom. She is of the Sapphic persuasion; she's "on the team"; she's Lesbionic.

You go, girl!

U2 – Miami Lyrics 17 years ago
Bono wrote: "some places are like your auntie". This phrase is key to understanding the meaning of the song.
Consider how an (Irish) auntie treats a child. She visits occasionally, she is friendly but perhaps rather cold; she may bring sweets (candy) or other small gifts, or she may not. She may be on good terms with your parents, or (like one of my aunties) may resent them for various reasons, perhaps dating back to their youth.
You may or may not look forward to seeing your Irish auntie. Perhaps you visit her; you could associate with your cousins, who are probably of your own age. But even in the 1970s when Bono grew up, many Irish women (including aunties) were choosing to be childless.
If your parents are cold, your auntie may be a source of comfort and advice; or, quite possibly, she is aloof and you feel much closer to your mother.
You may like your auntie, and you may not. She may like you, and she may not.
Bearing all this in mind, we can see that some places are, indeed, "like your auntie".

U2 – A Day Without Me Lyrics 18 years ago
This reminds me of a Sunday when I was twelve years old... my bedroom was very dark and for some reason I simply did not wake up until 7pm. The family had had an entire "day without me" but I was quite annoyed because I had school the following morning.

U2 – An Cat Dubh Lyrics 18 years ago
A brilliant evocation of childhood. The household pet plays a large part in a young person's imagination.
Bono is remembering such an animal; the title suggests a black cat. It sleeps, it chases a bird, it sits around; classic feline behaviours.
And the mystery of the cat's mind, the impossibility of reading that expressionless whiskered face, is brilliantly evoked by the wordless chorus: "oh oh oh oooh, oooh oh oh ooooh".

U2 – Gloria Lyrics 18 years ago
As a small boy growing up in Ireland, Bono would have attended Latin masses and thus would have a familiarity with the old prayers that is not understood by today's young people. The song is indeed moving, but the part near the end where Adam extemporises on the bass unfortunately reminds me of the "freeform jazz exploration" in Spinal Tap and spoils the effect.

The Jam – English Rose Lyrics 18 years ago
It's hard to see this song as anything other than an ironic joke.

"no bonds can ever keep me from she" contains a grammatical error so basic, so obvious, that I cannot believe no member of the Jam, nobody in the studio or the record company would tell Mr. Weller about it. Who doesn't use the correct term, "from HER?"

Small children perhaps?

And if Mr. Weller were truly writing a heartfelt ode to a woman, would he not take unusual care to get the words right?

No, what I'm seeing here is pure irony. The author is praising England and everything about her; but he pretends to be unable to speak correct English!

Surely this is a dig at the British educational system.
