| I think this song is about a relationship that is ending, but in a good way, they really loved each other, and maybe they still, but they realize the break up is for the best. I think they broke up too many times, ans she was always the one who left, because sometimes he couldn't remember how to be the person he was trying to be for her, the person that she wanted. And every time she left they ended it with a last kiss. He doesn't want to end the relationship, but he respects her decision, and also want her to know he really loved her, so if she ever want to look for him again, she knows she can. I love this song, I dedicate this to my ex boyfriend, it was the sanest break up I've ever had. | |

I love how she expresses her feelings, I can relate on feeling you have the fault that the other person stopped loving you, you see yourself so worthless and think this is why they left. Your reason says "no, he went away because he is an ashole" but you can't help to feel it was you. And she tells him to go away, before her anger for the way he made her look at herself tries to get revenge (Before the image that you burned me in Tries to teach you a lesson). And it seems he was someone who she dated twice, and he let her down the first time, and it was really difficult for her to feel better again, and now he hurts her again (It took me such a long time to get back up The first time you did it). And the line "When I was looking with calm affection You were searching out my imperfections" for me means, while she was happy and in love, he was secretly trying to figure out if she was the kind of woman he likes, trying to find her imperfections. My favorite line is this: "I was feeding on the need for you to know me", because in several songs she has stated her partners don't know her at all, and she thought this one was going to be the one she was gonna be able to open up with, and at the end it didn't work out, she wasted this illusion on him, because he doesn't believe in love. |

| I don't know if Fiona Apple wrote this song about this, but this is the meaning that the song has to me. She loved someone who let her down. But she stills loves him, because his presence has a power over her, so much that she doesn't feel free to be herself around him and this is why he doesn't know her at all, he doesn't know her courage, her dreams, the heat of her soul. And deep inside she knows this is the reason why he let her down, that it wasn't his entire fault, because she didn't show all the things that if she had shown, would have make him fall completely in love with her. This is why she says "I understand what I'm still too proud to mention to you", because she understand why he was not able to love her completely, but it stills hurts, so she doesn't want to admit it. Now he is back in her life, and he is telling her now he is going to understand her, and he is never gonna let her down, but she knows even tho his intentions are good, he is going to hurt her again, because she is never gonna be able to show her real self to him, and he is gonna leave her, and she doesn't need this, she doesn't need a new lie, and by realizing this, she feels as she is seeing from greater heights. | |
