Silverchair – Young Modern Station Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a SilverchairMeans1 song meaning.

"Stalled at Young Modern Station, athritic conversation"
-This section of the song represents how Daniel Johns was in the same place, doing all the same things all the time while recording Young Modern. Athritic conversations were the feelings he was going through after he came back from his illness of arthritis. He felt nothing could come across clearly, therefore he compared his illness to his conversations-they brought him down and limited his creatvie horizons.

"Life has a deadline lately, allergic and in the news"
Coming to the realisation, after going through his post-Diorama illnesses, that life doesn't last forever and that at any moment his ability to play and write could be stopped, he decided to make the most of all he had. Allergic and in the news is referring to his belief that no matter what happens, there is a good side to it. Allergic (aka having illness/disorder) and in the news (still being big, still living a good life and being known).

"The clocks are ticking down as dead Dali days behind us"
This line is referring to the limit that Johns felt he had to write Young Modern, with the belief that the album had to be done in a set time, whilst dead Dali days are of course long, painful and often busy parts of life.

"The band is back together, allergic and in the news"
This line is simply stating that Silverchair is back, regardless of public opinion. In this line, allergic and in the news has a different meaning and is about the knowledge that mainstream audiences probably wouldn't take to Young Modern, however they would be making some ground and getting a name back for themselves.

"Does it make you cry, when I make you feel so far away, the interview's over"
The first lines of the chorus are aimed at two groups: the media and the general public. For the media, he used these lines to show that he was going to be himself and push away anyone who tried to criticise him for doing his own thing. It was also as equally aimed at the general public, to say that he was going to do what he was going to do, and there would be no questions about it (the interview's over).

"I need a different liquor, so sick I'm getting sicker"
This line speaks for itself. He was feeling sick, frustrated and he needed a new musical path. (He portrayed this as liquor, an addictive but pleasureable and relaxing thing).

"And I'm moving back to the country, allergic and in the news"
This line was primarily aimed at Australians. Johns felt that in a way, he wasn't being an Australian musician as much, as the band had heavily followed overseas infulences prior to Young Modern. The allergic and in the news line comes back again to signify he knew he was going to cop crticism from Australian media and critics, but he knew it would be a good thing-it would make people aware of the band and his style of music for potential listeners.

CHORUS

"He dreams of tracks and choices, I think I'm hearing voices"
Johns is reffering to himself in this line, stating that he is dreaming of new pathways in life and new musical direction, and mirrors it with "I think I'm hearing voices", saying that his thoughts and dreams of new paths are just that-thoughts and dreams. His inner voice, in a sense, becomes someone else's.
