| he explains that the african tribe was his inspiration for writing the song, but i dont think that necessarily has much to do with its meaning. | |

i think this is actually pretty simple and people are extremely over-analyzing. this is simply an expression of the everyday struggle people have reasoning with whether to believe in god or evolution. first half of the song-belief of god "be wary of those that believe in a neat little world " (be wary of those who believe in evolution) second half-belief in evolution. but the song leans toward god- explained by the song's repetitive hook-"drop the devil to his knees" and also the last line of the last (evolution) verse, "hello god i'm avoiding the truth", expresses the struggle for how easy it can be to make sense of evolution, yet perceive this logic as a way of denying a maker. much like a pendelum that swings back and forth between being skeptical and faithful. dave's acceptance of evolution is clearly overshadowed by a belief in god by using the songs hook as a defense (to the devil) meaning from a religious point of view that the devil symbolizes the pull he feels when wondering about evolution. not saying dave is a devout christian-the song is meant to express the struggle. remember- dave is an extreme idealist, and wouldn't have a narrow assumption. |
