I also think it's "Fate will play us out."

Neon Trees – Your Surrender Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is more about a girl he has no relationship with. An "admire from afar" situation.

To me the opening lines is him seeing her sleeping in his dream.
"I taste the salt on your hands" is just a description of how vivid the dream is
"I reached out to touch you / the morning light disarms you / won't you let me in" describes how infinitely close he got to physical interaction during the dream before being shooken away by the daylight

In keeping with that translation, the second verse is him just trying to be close to her, even though she likely has no idea who he is. "Stalking" in a harmless and innocent way. Intense longing for something he doesn't have the guts to take or the hope to think would ever work out.

Throughout the song, he's trying to take as many silent forms as possible (dreams, shadows, ghosts) to just be with her without her knowing.

This song really resonates with me; truly the surprise hit of the album and so beautifully bridges the two radio singles. I'm not even sure how Tyler is supposed to sound at the end when he screams out the final "Oooooo"s, since I always find myself screaming it right along with him.

Brand New – At the Bottom Lyrics 16 years ago
I have to go with the image of death here. I understand that Jesse likes to write in code, that his songs often mean something totally different than what is featured on the exterior.

I think the song is featured around a funeral. The beginning doesn't necessarily mean that she married someone else, just that the songwriter is lonely. Maybe she married him, and he misses her in death.

I definitely make the connection that the box being lowered refers to a coffin being put in the ground. The part about serving drugs on a silver plate to me sounds like the songwriter may have participated in euthanasia.

The part about dying before he got old is an expression of the shock of outliving his wife/gf/whoever. He didn't expect to ever have to deal with the loss at such a young age.

The reference to the father, son and holy ghost is about the eulogy; as is remembering their favorite songs, as that's a big focus for recently passed loved ones: which songs they would want played at their funeral. I love the line "some men die under mountains just looking for gold; some die looking for a hand to hold." It's unclear which one the songwriter was, but he wishes he was the latter; as does everyone burying a loved one.

This song is so wonderfully haunting. I seem to like Brand New's songs that give off this vibe the most: Play Crack the Sky, Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis, Degausser, etc.

Senses Fail – Four Years Lyrics 17 years ago
Correctly or not, I always define songs in the context of love and/or breakups whenever possible, and I don't think you can fully understand this song unless you look at it from that perspective as well:

"I take a shot of Jameson or Jack to start the morning off"
- Pretty obvious. He's so wrecked by the relationship that he has to be drunk all day to put up with it.

"I'll celebrate like it's the anniversary of the day that we first met"
- I'll have as much fun drinking alone as I did drinking with you back when we were happy

"I've been practicing our eulogy"
- I've been practicing our breakup speech

"Separated all our things. I took my name off the lease. I'm leaving"
- Doing all the unpleasant but necessary breakup chores.

"Dear, four years hurt less than five. (and it's never a good time)"
- This hurts, but it will hurt more if we drag it out another year. It needs to just happen.

"I am sorry for all my crimes. And the wandering gaze of my unfaithful eyes."
- Self explainatory

"Now I wonder as I'm sliding under the subtle control of the drink. Will I have enough left in the bottle to say all the things I'm thinking?"
- Will I have the strength to tell you all that I feel, all the things wrong with this relationship and how unhappy we both are?

"I've been practicing my exit plan. Nervously checking time. I still don't know how I will survive."
- Self explainatory and similar to the last verse. He doesn't think he's got what it takes to make the split.

"When [she] came home I made her sit. My feet tap out a rhythm as I draw breathe in."
- She comes home and he starts his shpiel.

"To hurt the only one I've loved. This is so damn hard, but I am giving up."
- He considers one last time all that he has invested in the relationship and he breaks up, though not as eloquently as he'd like.

"The person that you loved is dead. I flooded him out with the Jack and Jameson."
- What a line! My alcoholism has changed me. I'm a shell of the person I used to be. I'm a lot worse off than I was 4 years ago; that person you knew and fell in love with 4 years ago has been gone a long time.

"So happy anniversary. The best gift I could think to give to you was to set you free."
- Good bye. I hope your life is happier without me than it was with me. This is the best thing for us, even though neither of us can see it now.

"Wake up. You're sleeping. Wake up. You're sleeping behind the wheel."
- This is harder to make sense of, but it's a real theme with the whole album. I guess because sleeping is as close to death as we're going to get in life, that the two are one in the same. The relationship is dead and wandering to wherever it is that relationships go when they are ended. It's a morbid and alien process. All the happiness, all the work, all the feelings just exit and all you know is a dull ache of loss.

Considering that, I think this is how Buddy wishes his breakup had gone. He wishes that he were strong enough to admit his own alcohol dependence and how it was tearing them apart. He wishes he had the strength to tell her that it wasn't her fault and that he will always miss and love her.

Too bad his didn't turn out that way.

Motion City Soundtrack – Calling All Cops Lyrics 17 years ago
I've always interpreted this song as the morning after what happened in "Last Night," when the character's (Justin's) girlfriend broke up with him. All the lines in the song reflect being hurt, despair, hopelessness, loneliness and lack of faith in humanity.

It's a sampling of how he feels inside. Every part of him hurts and, for this moment, he can't see it ever getting better.

Brand New – The No Seatbelt Song Lyrics 18 years ago
To me, the song is about love that isn't mutual. It sounds to me like the singer is ready for the relationship and the girl isn't. And the whole song is about the singer's readiness to give it all up to be with the one he wants

"So it's sad this doesn't suit you now
and me fresh out of rope"
I think this is a reference to how she's not ready for the relationship, and he's running out of time to tell her. He's running out of rope in that he's going crazy without closure on this matter.

"Please ignore this lisp
I never meant to sound like this"
My interpretation is that he could never say these things to her, because its unfair to her. So, I think he gets really drunk one night, removes the filter of common decency, and says what he means.

"So take me and break me
and make me strong like you
I'll be forever grateful to this and you"
He'll always be a stronger person with this girl and he's willing to spend the rest of his life repaying the favor if she'll have him

"Fix me to a chain around your neck
and wear me like a nickel "
Never leave me. Never make me be without you. Wear me around your neck and let me be with you always.

"Even new wine served in old skins cheapens the taste"
I struggle with this one, but I think that maybe its a reference to any other girl. Any effort on his part to make it work with another girl (new wine) just doesn't work as well, because its with someone else (old skins)

"I shot the pilot,
I'm begging you to fly this for me
I'm here for you to use, broken and bruised
Do you understand?"
I'd rather lay it all on the line and get rejected than live the rest of my life knowing I never tried. I'm completly helpless without you. Say you'll be with me, or doom me to an unhappy life

"But how could I miscalculate,
perfect eyes will have perfect aim"
He's been around, seen other people, and trained himself to know what he's looking for. He's found the girl for him. How could he be wrong?

"Perfect lies from a perfect dame"
She's lead him on for too long. They're at a crossroads. He needs to know if this is going to happen or not.

That's just what I think. That's what this song means to me, based on what is happening in my life. It's a beautiful song, its both melodic and lyrical. My fav. BN song after "Play Crack the Sky."

I think I'm going to learn how to play guitar because of this song.
