Wilco – Summer Teeth Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it is about someone who is so lonely that he feels less alive when he is awake than when he is asleep.

I think the first verse is about him trying to express his loneliness but can't because "His heart's in a bowl behind the bank".

I think the second verse has him dreaming of ways to escape his loneliness only to wake up and feel dead again.

The last verse could be about him having someone around but being too absorbed in his own sadness to notice. Or he has someone around with whom he has no emotional attachment but get some comfort from their presence even if he sometimes forgets they're there.
