Mirah With The Black Cat Orchestra – Monument Lyrics 17 years ago
its about the struggles associated with the gay rights movement and the "emptiness" and "hurt" they have had to go through in what is for her and others a "beaten down world."

taken to a wider meaning it can be attributed to voicing your opinion in pursuit of "the promised land" for whatever values you think need to be expressed and for your own right to be "free and brave," regardless of your grievance.

this song is in fact about the mobilization and protest politics associated in her life as she said at one of the live shows i was at. i too assumed it was about the gay community as pocket cat said

Sun Kil Moon – Carry Me Ohio Lyrics 18 years ago
the song definetely switches between two people: one loved, and still loves, the other ("can't count to all the lovers i've burned through so why do i still burn for you") but isn't loved back ("i could never love you back"). I think
"sorry that
i could never love you back
i could never care enough
in these last days"
is a girl who committed suicide and
"sorry that
i could never love you back
i could never care enough
in these last days"
is him regretting her suicide. either way she's pretty clearly dead since she "will rest." the rest of the song is a narrative not necessarily from either perspective. im sure ohio has some small significance like the location she committed suicide in but i dont think it really has any greater significance in the meaning of the song.

music is one of the few things that can bring tears to my eyes and this song, in the right moment, always does it.
