This song is basically making fun of the Average American. |

If you read the song from end to beginning, I think it shows the beginning of his life with his love up until her death. A very clever way or writing a song IMHO. |

To me it seems like the guy(or girl) is in a vicious cycle of drugs and his/her lover. I feel like the song is the repetitive day of this drug user in love, where the person wants to be with the one he/she loves, but the "handshake drug" user wants to be with their drugs. This person only thinks the "real" person who is, is the person addicted to drugs, but deep down he knows he wants to be with his/her lover and feels like a clown because of how he acts on the drugs. Someone who says "exactly what do you want me to be" is obviously someone on the rocks with whoever they are with and is realizing everything they have built up with this other person are diminishing because of the drugs. |
