The first time I heard this and read the lyrics along with it, I wasn't thinking war or environmentalism or anything political. I was actually thinking about a relationship, like how people picture their lives being so perfect and then things go wrong and we begin to feel hopeless. "We promised the world we'd tame it, what were we hoping for?" made me think of a newly married couple, ambitious about their relationship but then realizing that it's just like every other couple's relationship. "If it can be broke then it can be fixed" and all the variations makes me think of the ups and downs of relationships. "We will not be the first, we will not be the last" is rather self-explanatory. And then the carving and dripping at the end made me think of the painful parts of relationships. The "pioneers" and "frontiers" parts make me picture a headstrong couple heading out into the Old West, ambitious and strong but then doubting themselves as they face hardships. I can see all of these other meanings there too, of course. These are just the things that I pictured the first time I heard it, and thus these are the same things I picture every time I listen to it. I love this song. It's very deep, much deeper than these things I've written. :) |
