| Yeah, I think you're right about the reference of 1905 and 1917...I think the significance is that the 1905 revolutionaries never had to test-drive their ideas, they didn't have the horrors of what actually happened in and after 1917 so could still be radical. | |

To me, the song isn't ABOUT being gay, it's about looking for love and being deeply dissapointed. To say it's just about gay people ruins the beatiful universal appeal it has--"I am human and I need to be loved..." However, there's definitely a more specific level of meaning in which this song is particularly about Morrissey's own dissapointing search for love as a working class gay Catholic. That's the beauty of his music...it's deeply personal to him (I'd suggest this song is very, very much about the gay clubs on Canal Street for him) but his lyrics are written such that they have a universal appeal. This song's probably the best example of that. |

tetsuo, I agree that the lyrics have many levels of meaning, but I think it's pretty clear any reference to Jesus is fairly superficial and not really the point of the song. And yes, Morrissey pokes fun at angst, but at the same time many of his songs, including this one, have genuine angst in them as well. I think the prevailing meaning is about his own 'murderous desire for love'...but there's definitely references to gay rights--'how can they see the love in our eyes/and still they don't believe us?' And for those of us not obsessed with sex, a reference to love doesn't make something 'homoEROTIC'. Clean up your minds, people. |

Anal sex? Seriously? Although, an Irish Republican living in the country that has oppressed his people for centuries using an ancient Irish battle cry could possibly be about Irish independence... Morrissey is probably gay, but for God's sake, that doesn't mean all his lyrics are about it. |
