I've been in love with the same girl for about four years now, and man this song fits. I've told her how I felt a couple times but it's never been right. Now she's dating someone else and all I can think of is this song and its sentiment. Pretty sappy stuff, but that's the stuff life is made of, I guess. |

Guy meets girl, they have a thing and it's going pretty well, girl gets scared because she doesn't feel ready and breaks it off. Guy is left wondering what went on ("I never knew that verything was falling through...") . He wishes that they had never started, because then the reality might be easier to face . She moves on pretty quick ("Suddenly, I become part of your past...") and he wished that they could move on together ("I wont let it go down till we torch it ourselves..."), but that's not reality ("Just say that we agree and then never change..."). All along, mutual friends know that it won't work because of her issues but they don't let him know, and he feels like the last one in on the joke ("Everyone I knew was waiting on a que to turn and run...").
That's my take. Other interpritations could easily be made. Great song no matter what. |

I'm surprised I'm the first to comment on this song, its really good! Its about a relationship that is going bad. He has decided to try something new, to try to ignore what the other person is saying. In the end it still doesnt work and he gives up, all the while hopeing it can work out someday. Sad and optimistic in a way, at the same time. |

Maybe the best explaination yet. In my case, I like the girl but not really enough to date her. It hurts me to think of life without her, but life with her doesn't sound so great either. Plus, sometimes she irritates me and I know it shouldn't be that way. Literally, I can't live with or without her. |

The childhood idea makes sense but there's something a little more serious sounding about it. Can't put my finger on it. Someone asked if the fireflies were memories and I agree with that. I think that it could be more about saying goodbye to a specific time of life as well. For me it would be college; lots of good memories and friends that I've left behind. Anyone else think this way? |

Great song all the way around. Its open ended enough that any of these interpritations could work, but I personally think that yomahn and hottamale4983 have the right idea. It could very easily be about a pending breakup, but I think it could be an unrequited love thing too. |
