I think this is clearly about Sufjan's infatuation with his best friend when he was a kid. Sufjan's friend running away is probably about his friend being frightened by the nature of their relationship, and running away as a result. Sufjan still remembers his friend fondly and the depth of feelings he had for him. I think this is an incredibly courageous song, especially by a practicing Christian, male. It's naive to think our feelings always fit some strict predefined mold of how things SHOULD be. Love, especially at an innocent, early age comes in many forms. It's understandable that Sufjan would hold these very early, very innocent first feelings of love close to him now. |
