"Keep your naked flesh under your favourite dress." - He's not ready for her to be intimate with another man yet. He wants her to wait, or to not do it at all. |

It is such an innocent, nostalgic recollection of a childhood memory. Man can he write. |

| Chad Vangaalen – Willow Tree Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Watching him play this live with Lillian Penner was the most somber, but beautiful thing ever. The song is beautiful, another perfect account of someones view of death and dying. That there is in fact beauty in death, and not to be afraid, just accept it. | |
| Bright Eyes – We Are Free Men Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
-When the president talks to God, does he ever think that maybe he's not? That that voice is just inside his head when he kneels next to the presidential bed.- His lack of belief is shining through in this song, much in the same way it is in We Are Free Men, and so many other songs of his where the points he makes are rooted so smoothly behind the lyrics. |

| Simon Joyner – Medicine Blues Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I asked him at the Bright Eyes show in calgary if he would play it and he said yes.. That was the greatest live performance I have ever seen. The song is almost... showcasing a bunch of times where the world is so fucked up. Theres only one verse I can really wrap my head around: "Briefing the murderer under a bulb The lawyer asked the maggot don’t you want to get old? Because you can go down dignified and pay for your sins Or you can learn to lean on me and everybody wins So tell me whose your uncle and how do you plead? Don’t look down at your shoes kid, it’s time to look up to me" The worst criminal in the world can walk free if he has a good lawyer, if he knows the right people. He can "go down dignified and pay for his sins" but.. he never does. |

| Conor performed this when I saw him the first time in Calgary. He did it solo. Simon Joyner came on the next tour. I think theres definitely insinuations that of all the religions, we are free men. People do what they want, wheather they believe it or not. Like the costume references in the first verse. Simon Joyner is incredible. | |
| Sufjan Stevens – Adlai Stevenson Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Haha ahh yes. "What did he say? What was the answer?" When Adlai was speaking to ebassador Zorin at the UN general assembly about his USSR placing Soviet missiles in Cuba. "Do you, embassador Zorin, deny that the USSR has placed and is placing medium and inter-mediate range missiles in Cuba? Don't wait for the translation! Answer Yes or No!" The whole world was watching. What a genius. Just like Sufjan. |
