Bright Eyes – Going for the Gold Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't think I ever interpreted this song in the way that a lot of people have. I felt that it was about a relationship Conor or whoever the song is about was involved in. He loved the girl he was with, but hurt her, perhaps by cheating or just treating her bad in general. He loved her all along, but fucked himself and someone he cared about so much over. That is why he is an idiot, guilty, etc.

Bright Eyes – From a Balance Beam Lyrics 18 years ago
This is my take on it, and it may just be because I feel I can relate and have made it fit into my situation:

Conor, or whoever the speak is supposed to be, has led a life that he know looks back upon and is ashamed of. He feels a tremendous amount of guilt and shame, perhaps for hurting people he's loved or maybe even hurting himself or simply by allowing himself to be so incredibly unhappy. He wishes more than anything to become a better person and is optomistic, happy that he has finally decided to change and live a life that he can be proud of. He makes the decision to change, but then discovers that no matter what, he cannot escape the guilt for who he is (a bad person) and what he has done. He hopes that someday he can be freed of his guilt and happy with who he is, depite the fact that what he's done is unforgivable. I suppose the freeing can symbolize death. In the end I believe he is just choosing to continue to live his life, to find truth without worrying about the past or his fate. I don't know.
