I love the sound in the background, almost like a clock ticking. It drives the song, giving it a sense of urgency. It reminds me of the silence that you hear lying in bed at 3 AM when you can't sleep, and the only sound you can hear is your clock ticking infinitely, marching time onward. This seems like a 3 AM type of song to me. Those are the times, when you can't sleep, when it is just you and God and you pour your anguish out to the darkness and hope with everything that you have that something out there answers. |

I love this song, and all of the various interpretations of it.
First of all, Jammin Joe, on your breathing comment: A pastor named Rob Bell does a series of teachings called Noomas. You should check out the one called "Breathing", as it addresses that particular thought.
Back to the song, I love the various interpretations of "the second man". Personally, until I read these interpretations, I always related the second man to the criminals on the crosses next to Jesus. The first one mocks Jesus, but the second man rebukes the first and places his faith, in his final hours, with Jesus. He rejects his criminal past and asks Jesus to remember him when He comes into His kingdom. |
