my opinion on this is that its about a relationship that he was in. He's with this woman who is materialistic and he is not. He wants to be with her, but she thinks shes not going to get ahead in life with him. So she leaves him. the rest of the song i think he is saying that he would change for her if he could? he repeats over and over that he'll get it right, so maybe he wants to give her all the things she wants but just isn't able to, but for if he could he'd give her the world? |

i agree that its about a girl and religion. i believe j is talking about how he was christian and believed in god, then he meets this woman and is happy, theres rumors about how his son was killed by his wife and if this is true, this song could be saying how he believed that people are good and with this happening to him he believes that everyone is the same. the woman he thought was pure and everything great in his life, has become just like everyone else that has hurt him ('Cause one n a million is all the same). This is when J becomes depressed |

I think this song could also be a song to "fans". As in the song Thank You For Listening, J is saying thank you to fans for sticking with him and listening to his music. he also talks about how the feedback has made him feel again and how it makes him feel like he's not alone.
With this being said, this song is also to the fans but its pretty much the opposite. Et Al=with others, so he's talking about is he making a difference in the life of his fans. If people listen to his music, but don't try to find out the meanings, but rather just hear, then j feels like he's wasting his time. he puts emotion and time into his music and he wants people to appreciate it.
I however could see how it could be a reply to Danse Russe. J has said that Danse Russe is about a 2 day fling he had with someone, and this could be a direct connection to it. the song could be how he is hurt that it didn't work out with this person and that how he fell in love with her so fast but now she doesn't want him. He's may be talking about how he's hurt that the relationship didn't work out and this is his question to her, did I (J) make a difference at all? was he just another person to him or did he touch her at all?

I think the song is also about a relationship, but drugs may be involved. J is saying that he's in this relationship with the girl and she uses drugs. he tells her that she needs to quit, but she doesn't want to hear what he has to say; shes content where she is at. he's upset that his opinion means nothing to him and he sees his relationship slowly falling apart |

when i hear this song i think about the fan base more then an actual relationship. i think j is saying thank you to his fans for listening to him and all the mail and feedback he has got over the years. im sure people write him letters telling him of similar experiences or experiences they have overcame in their lives because of his music. This song is to the fans for sticking with him and helping through his hard times, cuz in turn from hearing what other people have gone thru, he is now in our shoes and he has became our own fans...if that makes sense |

i think the lyrics may be wrong... isn't it "Said my boy, its not a toy" instead of "Send my boy, its not a toy"? i dont know for sure but i think it makes more sense...
i think you need to know about the past of the singer, his son was killed by his wife. so this song is talking about how he found out his son died and when remembering about giving him a toy car, the dad realizes the the only rolls royce his son will be driving is a velvet rolls royce (which would be a nice coffin). when he says now a boy becomes a man, its saying how much he grew as a person from that experience. summers lost shows that the son died |

i agree with you "atta girl" but in away i have to also disagree. I believe the song is about drugs, but its also about a girl. I think its about how drugs have affected aaron's life and how he lost people throughtout his life because of his problems. this is a way of saying that he's sorry for leaving, hurting, etc people when he was addicted. Now that he's sober he looks back on how he's acted and he's ashamed, this is why he talks about saying sorry, and that now he's clean he's experiencing new feelings and how he feels like a different person now that he's not high |

i think the orginal poem is about a man and his family, the man may not be a leader, or a very important person, but in the eyes of his family he is the best. and when he is at home he feels free and happy. he is on top of the world when he is with his family.
with that in mind, the singer has this "fling" with this girl. And he is just overwelmed with the feeling he gets from her. its nothing like he has ever felt in his life, he is in love with her, however as you can tell in the song, she doesn't say much back to him. He stays up at night just to watch her sleep and he falls even more in love with her. This is def. a love song from a man to a woman saying, you bring out the best in me and you make me a better person. Thats why he is asking her to chase the ghosts from him |

I believe this song is about a woman he knows that uses sex for money, and with this money she buys drugs. He's seen what its done to her and this song is basically his reply to her, however, the last lines "and there's no hope when im in love with you, i can not cope, cause im addicted too.." this could either mean, he's also on drugs so he can't say anythign, or that he has another addiction, her. So he can't really say anything about her addiction because he loves her and not just the good things, he loves everything about her, he doesn't want her to change, but at the same time he is seeing her fall apart in front of his eyes |

I agree with MSTRBD, i just picture him and a girl either on the phone or in person, and she tells him she doesn't want to be with him (or some other bad news about their relationship, maybe cheating?) and he just takes this long pause...then she asks if he's ok, and during that pause his heartbreaks and the only thing he can say is that he's fine. Then he goes and thinks about in the beginning he was afraid of falling in love because of all the pain that comes with it |

i think your on the right track, i believe the this song is also about a child who is brought up in a household where the father abuses the mother. I see it as the child is going through all this pain because of this and he walks in on his mother crying because she can't take it anymore. he realizes that she has been hit in the face (this is the part where he talks about "oh, excuse me, you're morning, how callous and boring, I brush your hair, see your face, empty smile I touch that face, all the while")
The child then begins to hate his dad for what he has done to his mother,but at the same time he's also mad at his mother for not standing up for herself and leaving. He's stuck in the middle and about to lash out at someone |

He figures out something terrible about his partner (maybe she cheated on him) and he doesn't tell her he knows it...he keeps it inside and it kills him to see her and know that she is actually hiding this from him, but he doesn't want to lose her so he keeps it inside. I think the song is about aaron's life and how he feels alone sometimes. He may or may not smoke but the line "smoke the whole thing to my head, and feel it wash away" makes it seem like he uses drugs to coop with his lonliness. If anyone has every smoked then they know what he is talking about. Also the lines "i speak to you in riddles" "I talk to you like children" i think this means that he doesn't really know how to communicate with people, he has his own way of thinking and he feels that it is so far from the norm, that he just can't tell someone how he feels. he has to try to explain it in their words so they know "I speak to you in riddles". |

I don't believe anyone is really glorifying tool or Maynard. Maybe some people here basically worship him, who cares? If it really offends you then maybe you should just step back and think about this for a second, why does it offend you? Why do you care SO much about something so small as a band or a singer? This is just an open discussion for fans of the band and the song, a chance to throw ideas off each other to maybe expand each others deciphering of the songs and Maynard. Now people may be praising you for your thoughts on how tool and Maynard are hypocrites and don’t deserve the love that they get from their fans, should you not be praised then? cuz in fact you believe tool should not be praised for their thoughts and hypocrites....if you think about it, everyone is a hypocrite, no matter what kind of person you are. So in all actuality, you don’t want to be praised for your thoughts of tool? Our thoughts may not be the same on Tool (or anything else for that matter), but I do believe in the right for people to speak their minds. So this is not supposed to be a diss to you guys in any way, and this is not supposed to be my chance for people to talk about me. I’m simply saying everyone has an opinion so let people say what they want; we don’t have to put down people for having faith or not having faith. To each his/her own.
I am a fan of Tool, and I can see how people may not like Tool or Maynard for that matter. He is a hypocrite; I think he basically is admitting this in their latest album. I appreciate his work and his openness in his songs. It lets and makes people think at the same time. I mean how often do songs now days that make you actually THINK. Their songs might not be catchy at times, even plane pointless at times; at the same time however, they spark interest in people. Their songs are metaphors to me that may be interrupted different to some and that in fact are why people believe they are so great (my thoughts). So in a way people shouldn’t be mad at you for saying Tool is bad, they should be thanking you for your insight on the topic, so thank you |

I've always thought that this song is about drug....like the whole under the bridge stuff is talking about shootin up and the verses are about how there is so much beauty in LA but there is also a dark side (drugs) and this is his attempt to clean up and just enjoy the simple things in life |
